I would say that most of the players who left were already on their way out. The only ones I think that he could have reached and retained were Armstead and Wilson since the others had already basically left by the time Altman was hired. Even with Wilson, I don't think there was much Altman could do since the only think keeping him was Kent and his firing just pushed him towards Marquette. Armstead is a curious case because we haven't actually received any confirmation of what has happened or is happening. If he is transferring, there must have been some issues between them that just couldn't be worked out or Armstead just didn't want to play for someone other than Kent.Boom wrote: I don't recall many if anyone saying that. Didn't we essentially force Belotti into the AD role, so that we could keep Kelly?
About Altman..... I have little doubt that he's an above average X's & O's coach and is a substantial upgrade from Kent in this department....
But his success (and every other BCS conference coach) will ultimately come down to how well he can bring talent in to our program (This was never a concern for Chip Kelly). You cant just rely on "coaching kids up". Our conference is just too competitive for that....
Obviously we wont know for sure how Altman will do until the next recruiting cycle is over.
But judging by his inability to "re-recruit" our current roster, it's fair to say he's off to a rocky start.

^ He still had a chance to sell Humphrey & Crittle into returning. I think the only player that was truly gone before he got there was Wiley.

We have no idea, though. For all we know Humphrey demanded a starting job in order to stay, and Altman said he'd have to compete for it. Humphrey bolts, fans think Altman is unable to keep his players.

I find it really hard to bash anything Altman has done so far. I would say the work he's done with the local coaches in the area/region will have a much more lasting effect than what the players who left would have given to the program.

Getting the high school and AAU coaches to trust Oregon's coaches again is big to re-establish the NW and West Coast as the main recruiting grounds for Oregon. The Midwest proved fertile for a while but once Kent was gone, some of those players left fast since there was no longer any connection there. The West Coast has been left untapped by Oregon for the last couple years so it will pay off long-term to recruit out here.Boom wrote:and why is that?Duck07 wrote:I find it really hard to bash anything Altman has done so far. Sure, but you do see the advantages of recruiting locally in Portland/Seattle where there have been a lot of nba/college talent in the past years, right?Boom wrote:I don't care were we get the talent as long as we get it....greenyellow wrote:Getting the high school and AAU coaches to trust Oregon's coaches again is big to re-establish the NW and West Coast as the main recruiting grounds for Oregon. Recruiting the NW also means that players will be less likely to leave due to homesickness since they'll be within driving distance of family so they can watch them play and visit.

Yes, but it's not like we haven't recruited the NW.......... Kent brought in several guys from Oregon & Washington.Duck07 wrote:Sure, but you do see the advantages of recruiting locally in Portland/Seattle where there have been a lot of nba/college talent in the past years, right?Boom wrote:I don't care were we get the talent as long as we get it....greenyellow wrote:Getting the high school and AAU coaches to trust Oregon's coaches again is big to re-establish the NW and West Coast as the main recruiting grounds for Oregon. The kids that we missed out on were never going to come to Oregon....... and having a good "relationship" with their AAU or high school coach wouldn't have changed that
It takes a pretty special kid to turn down Duke, UCLA, Kentucky, and/or Kansas......
I would be pretty surprised if Altman changes that

Re: armstead
That's an excuse to make fans feel better when they don't get local talent. Every year there are players around the country that choose to stay home or local instead of going to the Duke's and UCLA's of the country. Those relationships are very important. Believe it.Boom wrote:Yes, but it's not like we haven't recruited the NW.......... Re: armstead
^ no thanks, sounds like a lot of BS to me.
Kentucky, UCLA, & Duke don't miss out on very many recruits and the ones that they do miss out on are likely going to a different top tier basketball school. I don't think Oregon would even be considered a top 25 program.....
Do you really think Singler would have turned down coach K if Ernie had a better relationship with his coach........or instead of Ernie we had Altman as our coach......
I agree that the relationship helps...... but not to the point were we can pull away a top 20 recruit from a major program.

Re: armstead
Gues we will never know the answer to that question until it starts to happen, eh?
Never is such a decisive word. If a coach develops talent well, and develops relationships within the community well, I believe players will come.
All those big name coaches, with their wonderful charisma and drawing power, started somewhere.
Lute Olsen was a decent coach when he recruited Damon Stoudamire out of Oregon, but he definitely did not have the reputation he developed over the next few seasons.
If Altman can build those relationships with Northwest players and coaches, and then show the ability to develop and use that talent successfully, the ability to compete for those top players will come.
If players still seem to be wasting their time and talents here, recruits will continue to go elsewhere.

Do you have even a scintilla of evidence this happened? On it's face this claim seems utterly and completely untrue.pudgejeff wrote:Recruited damon?...you mean paid damon?...he was pulled over on his visit to portland to see damon and had his car searched...in it they found a briefcase with 10 grand in cash in it
