It's almost like he just needs some motivation, because surely the shooting and athleticism is there. I just don't see anything changing since he's already a JR. But hey bump this thread halfway through the season and let's see who is right. I want Sim to do great, but I just don't see it happening.
I think this is where a new coach will do wonders for a few of the players. Sim will have every opportunity to excel and while we've yet to see Altman coach a game, I imagine the players that are here are ready to work and buy-in to his system/style.

By rule I don't think he's a slasher-type, so I would be hesitant to judge him on a level of play he just isn't comfortable with. Not every player is shooter, not every player is great at getting into the lane. As I said earlier, Sim has always struck me as a specialization player at this level, more comfortable on the perimeter. That doesn't mean he lacks intensity. That's an uneducated judgment call from the stands.

Also, for the Sim/athleticism discussion, I dare anyone to post a YouTube vid of a play in Duck history that took more athletic ability than Sim's end-of-the-half lay-in against Wazzu up in Pullman this past year. I can't find that vid, either, but hopefully most here remember it, since it was only a couple months ago. That single play took more athleticism than a Fred Jones throw down, however awesome Jones' dunk highlight reel may be.

Understatement. He lives in the perimeter... Anytime he drives, it seems very unorthodox. He's not a basketball player.. Sure he's fast and athletic, but you even just admitted he's an outside guy. How can he be an outside guy when he can't even shoot?

Beyond that, he's not a very good defender, and again, he shows no aggressiveness on the court. Go watch some games of his from last year's conference play, and you'll know what I mean.

I'm not arguing athleticism. I played on his federal baseball team in 7th grade. We had the best team in state, and he was ridiculously fast, and made some diving plays on D. But one youtube highlight (probably his only dunk highlight) doesn't prove anything. Teondre... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtchy10z0L0

I dont get the Sims is extremely athletic love.......

Those problems are directly correlated with his lack of size/athleticism.

Sims would be adequate if he was competing against point guards, but he's not.

SG's in the Pac 10 are often the most explosive players on the court. Sims is already giving up 4-5 inches in height....... and probably 6-7 inches in reach..... You cant give up both size & athleticism and expect to be successful defensively.

I think Brett Kingma could have similar problems.

I posted the link because you said you had never seen Sim use his athleticism. I wasn't trying to make a larger point, merely providing you with a highlight you apparently had missed.

This whole thread has been about Sim and his struggles with consistency shooting the ball. You, personally, are very prone to blanket statements and snap judgments. I've come to realize this via some other threads. All I'm doing is clearing up some misnomers about his game, and suggesting that one of the reasons he hasn't lit it up from deep is because he had some fairly elementary obstacles in his way. You're saying the kid is awful, but I'm not even saying he's destined to be a stud; I'm not operating such extremes. I'm just sayin', he's shown that he can shoot the ball MUCH better than he has at Oregon, and the reasons for his struggles can almost all be linked back to Captain Wacky Substitutions.

I completely conceded the point about Sim being nonathletic. I agree he is athletic, but he never shows it. What I meant to say is he doesn't utilize many of his attributes such as athleticism.

And I disagree that one of the reasons he hasn't been shooting so well is because of the way his minutes were distributed. That's a nonsense excuse in my eyes. While getting into rhythm is big, and I agree it could have some effect to SOME extent, there's more to it then that. Like I've said, Sim shows very little enthusiasm on the court and he doesn't utilize any of his talents. And it's not just 3-point shooting, because at Sunset high school, he would drive all the time and hit an array of shots. But here at Oregon, all he does is sit at the 3 point line and misses. The times he does drive or does try to create something, it rarely works out.

I think it has more to do with Pac 10 defenders than inconsistent minutes........ again...... Sims will obviously be more tentative to drive when he has bigger more athletic players defending him.

We'll definitely have to table this and wait to see how he closes out his Oregon career. I can't think of anything more damning to a shooter than inconsistent minutes and attempts, and you seem to gloss over that fact. Here, I ended up doing the legwork:

In his first 11 starts as a freshman, he averaged 28 minutes a game, 11.8 points a game, and shot 43% from beyond the arc. He also averages 8 shot attempts a game. Those are pretty awesome numbers for a true freshman playing (what I consider) out of position. Did he hit the freshmen wall once Pac-10 play ramped into full gear? Absolutely. The whole team did. Many freshman do. It happens. But you take the good out of what your freshmen do, and after an offseason of work you try to mold their minds and bodies to withstand the rigors of a full season. How did Ernie follow up Sim's freshman year, which certainly showed a lot of promise? Cut his minutes played in half. Cut his shot attempts in half. OF COURSE his overall numbers suffer. Most sophomores are allowed to have their roles expanded, not shrink.

Again, I'm not saying the kid is destined for greatness. I'm merely saying he showed a lot of promise as a freshman, and I think it's criminal that he's being judged on last year. The numbers don't lie, he had no idea identity last year, spotty playing time, and operated in a directionless offense. Missed a shot, he was benched. Hell, do you guys remember the Pac-10 finale in Mac last year? Sim buries a deep trey, then was benched. Comes back in over TWENTY GAME MINUTES LATER, buries another trey. Even when he was shooting well, he couldn't get minutes or attempts.

Gotta look at the competition through those games. Lots of those teams are not very good. Your opinion is just as valid as mine, and you bring up some good points. But I still think you're wrong.

And his last 10 starts in the Pac 10 he averaged 23 mpg..... 4.3ppg, 1rpg, 1.3apg, 1.8t/o pg. He shot 34 3s making 24% of them........

Sims obviously isn't going to be great....... but even if he does become a decent spot up shooter..... his teammates will have to create open shots for him.... and he still gave up any shot an opposing Pac 10 guard wanted I don't see that changing.

TP and Sims were likely the worst defensive back court in Pac 10 history.

Sure, North Carolina, Alabama, Texas, @ Utah, San Diego, St. Mary's, Kansas State... hell, Portland beat Washington that year and won a respectable 19 games... our out of conference slate that year was MUCH more difficult that it was this past season. This point is a fail.

You always think I'm wrong. Then I turn out to be right. Though it may seem like I often do, I rarely talk out of my ass just to get reactions.

Yes, I'm aware. Believe it or not, that's what I was referencing when I said "he hit the freshman wall" six different times in this thread.

So do you blame the "freshman wall" for his inability to defend Pac 10 guards?

After TP..... Sims was our worst perimeter defender.
