Dorlus willl be a stud on the D-line.

We also have Ware-Hudson, Kristian Williams and Pop on the interior.

Edge we have: Macael Afaese, Swinson (he will be good), Navarette, Shipley and Keanu Williams.

We don't have elite players outside of KT but we have solid depth at minimum moving forward.

My position importance ranking is subjective, and of course a 5-star TE is more valuable than a 3-star Edge. Curious if anyone disagrees with the grades, not the ranking of import. Grades are expectation based and comparative; if we’re landing Kingsley, Banks, and Walden at OT and Franklin/Thornton at WR then the expectation is raised at other positions.

DL is the clear outlier to me. Getting Gracen Halton, hopefully we sign him, is a good sign. But Jim Mastro was they key recruiter there. Some star power is badly needed, especially at Edge. Cyrus Moss would fill that need. I had hopes for Anthony Lucas, the 4-star DT out of Arizona, as well. We could really use a game breaking defensive lineman that can get into the pocket, once KT is gone for 2022 it looks bleak compared to the rest of the roster.

Navarrete would have been our biggest recruit most years. And Jones was a fringe 4* recruit. We have had some misses, but the DL is going to be good going forward. At DE we have 5 former 4* guys and at DL we also have 4 former 4*. I actually think we have a lot of young talent at DL, and should be good there this season.

I’d grade the DL/DE recruit a B-/c+

Just remember there was a time when Duck fans were complaining we couldn't get Linebackers, then it was running backs, then offensive line. As long as we are not Ohio State or Alabama, or one of the top big boys we will always have week areas. We will have to win with weak areas before we can have our wishes of four stars across the board.

That's fair. No instant impact guys outside KT and a lot of people who are TBD. Lots of young talent that are unknowns at this point. Dorlus looked good at the end of last season. Kristin Williams and Ware-Hudson apparently both played last year, but I don't recall anything special/specific when they were in (the DL last season wasn't particularly great anyways).

Anyways we signed 12 (minus Townsend who transferred) DE/DL between the 2019 and 2020 classes. Lots of them are quality players although some like 4* Sua'ava Poti have kind of disappeared.... I think only 4 of them have even gotten meaningful playing time. This will be their 2nd/3rd year in the program so now's their time to shine.

In an ideal world, we could get DL that can stuff the run and create pressure on their own to disrupt passing plays. After seeing what some of you have written, I guess I'm hopeful for this season but I'm not convinced after seeing the product on the field the last few seasons. The 2019 DL covered the right gaps and allowed Dye and ISM to make the plays. That was a good defense but if we want to reach the next level, I think the DL has to be able to create plays on their own. That's how you'd really shut down the run. I know the 2020 season was wacky but the DL couldn't even do the basics and fill the right gaps.

Ducks are having a hard time getting their guys at both DB spots and along the defensive line. In a very surprising move, Hero Kanu didn't include Oregon in his top 9. He was a major priority for Oregon, and Coach Joe was retweeting and liking his tweets all the way up to his announcement that they weren't in that not-terribly-exclusive group.

Similarly, Oregon has had a hard time getting their first or second choices in the secondary. Jalil Tucker would be a huge win, but with the lack of other commits, he's a must-get not just a nice-to-have. So far, Rod Chance doesn't look like he's on par with Donte Williams.

Outside of Wright, did Donte bring in anyone that was NFL quality during his time? The Ducks haven’t been killing it in DB recruits for a while that I can remember. Was Donte responsible for McKinley? Davies? Davies was recruited by SC hard, but decided to stay at UO. Could have easily followed Donte. I say give Chance, a chance.

Donte also brought in Dontae Manning.

Dontae Williams is listed as the primary recruiter for: Justin Flowe, Mykael Wright, Jamal Hill, DJ James, Kris Hutson. Jared Greenfield, and Dontae Manning. That’s an assumed 4/11 defensive starters in Wright, Flowe, Hill, and James. Manning and Hutson are at worst rotational players for 2021 and JJ Greenfield got in six games and three tackles last season.

Luke Hill is the big miss, not for lack of talent. Other than that it’s a pretty good hit rate for the data we have.

I’m not too concerned yet with Chance at CB. If anything I’m very optimistic. Last year getting Avante Dickerson late was a coup. Him and Jaylin Davies, plus the flier on Barkins, are a good haul. This year he got Hullaby while Marcel Yates got Trejon Williams. Jalil Tucker would be great. That’s as well as we’ve ever recruited at DB. Lots of offers out at DB, so we’re not getting the top of the list targets but still not too shabby compared to OL.

You have definitely mentioned it before.

Avante Dickerson fell into our laps. Chance gets credit for him in the same proportion as Neil gets credit from Ugo Amadi. Am I happy with the result? Sure. But it was much more luck than skill.

Wasn’t Dickerson committed to Minnesota in the first place, where Chance had recruited him? Dickerson was offered by Minnesota right after Chance got hired as their DB coach. That is pretty much the opposite of getting a recruit calling you while you’re golfing because some high school coach gave him the wrong phone number.
