Thompson could still be good. He just wasn't ready on day 1, and might not be on day 366 to compete against Georgia next season. They need to fix recruiting the position, first and foremost, because in my opinion Tanner Bailey is definitely not going to be the solution, either.
So last year I disagreed with you on Sam Vidlak since it looked then like we certainly wanted the QB to be a runner and that isn't his skill. But I would agree that he's a better fit in OSU's system.
Have you seen Dom Montiel out of Marshfield? Seems a much more natural fit for what we want (and he's already used to throwing to giant WRs) and while he visited Corvallis last week I don't see him as a good fit there.
I still would have taken Vidlak! He had some really positive reviews last spring and this fall in Corvallis.
I hadn't heard of Montiel but the kid looks fantastic.
I think that's a great example of why you don't offer QBs you're iffy on when there's more than a year left in the recruiting cycle. Guys turn up during their senior years (Connor Cook at Mich St, Treyvone Boykin at TCU, Jaxson Dart now at USC just to name a few) who seem to 'come out of nowhere.' Oh yea, those kids Marcus Mariota and Justin Herbert weren't half-bad, either.
You are a much better judge of talent than me, but here's my one question: If we're in such a dire position AND Thompson, Butters and Ashford are not as good as advertised, then wouldn't we be super active in the transfer portal? My guess is that we'll know a LOT about how these 3 are developing depending on how many QBs we take (currently only the one) AND whether we start to scour the transfer portal.

It could be that AB is just a really good game manager and we never had the opportunity to get the young guys more snaps.
I'm of the same thought. If Moorhead and Cristobal think they have the guy they need already, they'll stay pat. If they don't, maybe we'll end up with Casey Thompson or similar. I'm personally a bit frustrated by the recruiting, though. I think we should have had Jaxson Dart in the last class (could've taken two if we never offered Ashford) and in this class anyone from Devin Brown to this Montiel kid would have more promise than Bailey.
I think Thompson was worth taking, but he was more of a project than rankings led folks to believe.

Montiel currently only has a preferred walk-on offer at OSU, so the Ducks could also offer him that opportunity, and perhaps have done so. That being said, sounds like he actually really likes OSU and he's interested in studying engineering, so he would probably choose the OSU preferred walk-on spot over Oregon's. He also have a full ride offer to Portland St., so that could also play a factor.

Thanks, I didn't have any insight into his recruitment but I kind of figured that pwo was what Oregon would offer him. I think the only way we offer him is if we know someone else is leaving the QB room.

Yea, unless they see Bailey's senior film and decide he's not good enough, I don't think they'll look for another HS recruit. I think Bailey is OK, so I don't see that happening.
Read an article this morning about the Ducks coming back around on David Bailey (https://247sports.com/player/david-bailey-46084884/), proposing that he play KT's position. To me, that doesn't seem to signal that we're in a good spot with Cyrus Moss.

Blair Angulo said Moss is going to come to Oregon on another visit, so that’s a good sign. Hopefully.
They’ve been trying to get more DL no matter what. Nyjalik Kelly is supposedly wanting to stay in the Sunshine State, and that Canadian kid that moved to Florida, Isaiah Hasting, committed to Bama. He was supposed to be in Eugene a few weeks ago but an airline strike or that sick-out or whatever led to him not being able to get to Eugene as scheduled.
Tanner Bailey: Auburn’s OC went to one of his games recently. Of note, since Bailey’s dad played at Auburn. Bailey’s team lost in the second round of the playoffs, last year they made it to the title game. He’s been really good this year, candidate for state player of the year, and his competition involves the younger brother of what I think is a pretty good comparison for Bailey; Bo Nix. I looked at some of Bailey’s play from this year and I’m particularly impressed by his arm talent and ability to throw on the move. Much better velocity on short throws than I thought, he’s throwing some heat. Looks very natural throwing on the run, very important skill to have in a Moorhead like offense.
Winston: Huffman has been to a few CC games. Winston has been pretty good rushing the passer and causing fumbles. He’s built wider than La’Mar and has a great first step.
Cyrus Moss getting a top-3 out right after visiting Bama, not having Bama in his top-5, while having a visit scheduled for Florida for next month that he is not considering anymore is the logical result of Nick Saban getting the full court press on Moss. That’s a good sign for Moss’ evaluation, not great for Oregon’s chances.
Darius Clemons is a mid year enrollee so he’s going to commit somewhere sooner rather than later. Watched an interview with him a while back, sounds mature beyond his years.
Josh Connerly was expected for his official visit on Saturday. He will instead be in Ann Arbor for yet another visit, call it a done deal. Inability to capitalize on Seattle area talent continues. If Kelvin Banks bounces this would have been the saving grace.
Michigan is also hosting Zeke Berry, also looking like he’s a Wolverine.
Nyjalik Kelly and Deionte Scott are at Auburn this weekend for the Iron Bowl.
