Wilcox having 2 out of 9 .500 or better season is really bad. Rolovich has had 4 out of 6 seasons with a .500 or better record. Rolovich doesn't have a big track record so it's really hard to say strongly one way or another. I feel like any decent hire can do better than 2 for 9. So if I were a betting man, I'd bet he would do better. Okay, so just transitive property. Not a Rolovich fan, but have always liked the idea of Cal being good so hopefully if they make that decision it works out.
Yeah, my memory was more 2021 where his team ended up 2nd in the Pac 12 North behind the Ducks. I guess in retrospect, anyone is free to decide how much credit to assign to him for how his team did; at the time I thought it was a pretty good result for a team like Washington State after they lost Mike Leach. I do think the violent reaction is interesting, given the relatively small amount of data. Cal can do better if they actually want to put effort in. They are a great school in a football hotbed state, if they want try in football for the first time in a decade they could easily succeed in a weak ACC.
I just think any P4 school should look to a coach that has at least been a position coach in the last half decade. Sure if it’s Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, you risk it. He was coaching at a high school in the years after he was fired. It's not like he's been away from the game. Anyway, I think he is a legit choice if the current batch of players like him. People ripped on Cristobal and said he didn't have the chops, but the players gave him a vote of confidence and now he is a fairly successful head coach, despite his issues. I think the anti-Rolovich thing is probably because he wouldn't get the jab, which I suspect is a function of his slavic/religious heritage. It certainly isn't because he lacks a resume - the guy was the 2019 Mountain West Coach of the Year. I know that doesn't fall under your half-decade window, but I still think it counts.
I think I would go with Lupoi who has shown an ability to recruit and understands how to connect to players better. Grubb is certainly a better X's/O's guy, but that's not always the best thing for a HC and Cal needs a boost of energy after Wilcox and Grubbs is far to demure in that regard. Grubb may have a higher floor as a coach but I think Tosh would give them a chance at a greater ceiling if his recruiting were to pay off for Cal and he would be less likely to bolt should he succeed.StevensTechU wrote: Tue Nov 25, 2025 9:53 am If you're Cal, do you go with Tosh Lupoi or Ryan Grubb?
