I don't know for sure what LMJ's personal best in the 100 is. I always thought it was in the 10.4 range, but could be mistaken. I do know that in 2006 LMJ's winning time in the state track meet was 10.51. By comparison, Jonathan Stewart's second place time in the Washington 3A 100 meter dash finals was 11.17. Jamere Holland's personal best is 10.36.

Except every time we've seen LMJ break into the second level, he's burnt and can't accelerate into a top end and gets caught. His 40 time is super duper fast, but he doesn't have the break-away top end. That's okay, I'll take rushes between 7-25 ypc any day of the week.

J-Stew may have had a slower 40 time, but his endurance and top end were better.

I'm not sure, but I dont think he has ever been caught from behind on those long runs. It's usually a defender with a really good pursuit angle, but maybe I'm wrong.

One thing I have notice is that his "burst" quick acceleration is off the charts. Probably the fastest I've ever seen from a Oregon running back.

When he does get a long run, he's usually tracked down by a DB or LB who has gotten a good pursuit angle while James is trying to make a cut. James always seems to try to make a cut even though doesn't have to. He needs to trust his speed will get him those extra yards, and not the extra cuts. I remember Coach Campbell and Bellotti said the same thing about JJ and it wasn't until JJ trusted the speed he had that he got more yardage from just straight running than from cutbacks.

Look at the 3:25 mark, LMJ has a lead and an unabated shot at the end zone and gets caught from a diagonal pursuer from behind.

Yeah....kinda, it was more like LMJ ran in the wrong direction (towards him and not away from him almost like he didnt know he was there).

LMJ getting caught almost always has more to do with his field vision rather than his speed. With experience he'll start learning how to use his blockers effectively.

Very few, if ANY, defenders are going to be able to keep up with LMJ, let alone catch LMJ in a straight line sprint. He IS THAT FAST. The stop watches dont lie or exagerate. Whether it be a 30 yard jaunt or a 99 yard romp.....We just havent had an opportunity to see this freshman run yet...IT will happen, its just a matter of when...

We might see LMJ put up some big numbers this weekend and break a few long runs!

If LMJ ran a 10.51 100, to put it in perspective Jahvid Best ran a 10.3 100... Not quite as fast but
what's so great about LMJ is he's so elusive, and that adds up to big YPC.

Remember those 100 times are without pads...some people have better football speed, while some have worse

Good point Jeff and I was thinking the same thing. However, I also know that most senior players actually get faster with their pads on even if they don't without them on. He being a RS freshman and still raw - should get a bit faster as he matures in football.

I would take Kelly's word on LJ's speed versus JJ's. In the end LJ will be as faster than JJ on the field and that is plenty fast.

Lastly, even JJ was caught from behind in last year's CW, but knew how to turn and push off with a staightarm to finish. That is a learned skill.
