Powell and Edwards have nothing to do with ratings. Its tape. Coaches see something with them. The NCAA appears to have a program/option for schools to bring a guy in and for a year, get his grades up and then resubmit to the clearinghouse for eligibility. Thats the case with Edwards.jimmy12 wrote:Edwards looks like a beast if he can qualify and add 25 lbs.
Powel-- has a limited offer list and is from a Ft. Lauderdale, so curious why we'd pass with higher rated recruits.

You talking about that Alabama gray shirt?TualatinDuck wrote:Powell and Edwards have nothing to do with ratings. Its tape. Coaches see something with them. Wonder why this wasn't done for Bruce Judson.

This is something that Alabama and some other SEC schools do from what Ive read. PSA comes in, counts toward the class, participates in the program in all aspects except is not eligible to play. Does count against their 5 to play 4. Never knew about this option until recently. Creapa had mentioned it in an article as well.

No, grayshirting is delaying enrollment. With an academic redshirt, he’s in school attending class, on scholarship but can’t play. I don’t even think he’d be able to practice but could be wrong with that.jimmy12 wrote:What is an academic redshirt?Duck24 wrote:Edwards is legit. He’d be an academic redshirt per JHop.
Grey shirt?

Apparently can practice BUT also counts as redshirt year (5 to play 4).
From the NCAA, the stipulations for an academic redshirt are: A college-bound student-athlete may receive athletics aid (scholarship) in the first year of enrollment and may practice in the first regular academic term (semester or quarter) but may NOT compete in the first year of enrollment

Re: Some interesting new names from hop
It sounds like the academic redshirt can practice but has one term to get his/her grade up or they can no longer practice is that correct? I know the year I spent a regular redshirt, if they fail to bring their grades up the first term do they have the whole year to get them up and stay on scholarship?jimmy12 wrote:Duck24 wrote:No, grayshirting is delaying enrollment. I think this is a year long program. Practice and grade and no opportunity to be pulled of RS. I think.

A grayshirt does not get a scholarship. They pay their own way, and are not allowed to practice. Their scholarship kicks in after the first semester.
I think it's being mistaken for a blueshirt, which can receive an immediate scholarship, participate in practice, but aren't allowed to appear in games. In order to qualify you aren't allowed to be "recruited" meaning no official visits, no formal scholarship offer. It's basically a wink and nod to pretend someone is a walk-on and give them an immediate scholarship.
The thing is, no shirt color can be used on someone who fails to qualify academically and meet NCAA clearinghouse standards. If anything, it's more difficult to be admitted to U of O, since the athletic department can't use their special exemption.
In other words, U of O has some minimum academic standards and there are NCAA clearinghouse minimums. The NCAA clearinghouse minimum is the floor, if you don't meet it you're not getting in. That's why even a special exemption wouldn't help someone like Bruce Judson.
In other words: blueshirts/grayshirts are used to circumvent signing limits and running out of scholarships, they won't do anything if someone is an academic non-qualifier.

I think we just need to hold on to the scholarships we have left and save them for some grad transfers who could make a difference next year instead of using them on some lower rated kids that may or may not ever see the field. Then use those scholarships next year on better players.

I'd much rather have Juwan Johnson from Penn St. or the Miami WR than either of these guys. We desperately need WR help for Justin's last year.

This coaching staff knows what they are doing in recruiting so if they offer
a kid im sure they know what they are doing. A great early signing class and
im sure we will be just fine this next one..

I find it funny that we comment under the assumption that we have the same info as the coaches when it comes to recruiting. I have no doubt in my mind they make or don’t make offers based off knowledge that we do not have because well, we are fans not recruiting coaches.duckfan22 wrote:This coaching staff knows what they are doing in recruiting so if they offer

Since we've been getting so many 4 and 5 star players, maybe we're staring to get "star blinders"?
3 stars? That guy sux.
Stars are a good indication of talent, but aren't everything. We lost to multiple teams last year filled with 3 star guys.
