Something that's been on my mind about Marcus, Dillon, #8 and Hawaii QBs is that when we created the 808 Mariota facemask, there's the obvious connection of 8-O-8. You don't have just 1 #8, you need a second #8 so it'd be very fitting if Dillon wins and the theme becomes that 8-O-8 and you've got a righty and lefty to frame it off of.
Getting the top players from the islands should always be a priority for us.

JKR getting ranked a 5* is emblematic of what's wrong with rankings. If Oregon, Georgia, and others didn't push for him at the last second and he just stayed a Cal commit, his ranking would be lower, and Cal's team recruiting ranking would be lower. The talent gap is often overstated because the same kids would be rated differently if they were committed to Cal or committed to Georgia.

I'm just curious if his interest has swayed in any way towards Oregon

I think it's more than that though. He was great on the summer camp circuit and at the Elite 11 Camp. He's then had a remarkable, record-breaking SR season that only ended because he couldn't finish a playoff game against powerhouse Saint Louis HS due to a rib injury.StevensTechU wrote: Mon Nov 18, 2024 12:50 pm JKR getting ranked a 5* is emblematic of what's wrong with rankings. If it was the summer camp, it would have coincided with that. Instead it coincides with Oregon and Georgia getting him to visit.greenyellow wrote: Mon Nov 18, 2024 7:36 pmI think it's more than that though. Also, just to note, recruiting ratings have almost no correlation to high school production.

He got bumped up to a mid-4* after camp season and has now been reranked (along with a few others) after the season has played out. He'll likely rise in the other services too, but probably not up to where he is in On3's rankings.StevensTechU wrote: Mon Nov 18, 2024 8:34 pmIf it was the summer camp, it would have coincided with that. I believe 247 has had him ranked ahead of Akili Smith Jr and Ryan Montgomery for most of the year now. He just recently moved up one spot to 9th on their list.StevensTechU wrote: Mon Nov 18, 2024 8:34 pmIf it was the summer camp, it would have coincided with that. There seems to be some buzz in the twitterverse that he will stay committed to Cal.Boom wrote:I believe 247 has had him ranked ahead of Akili Smith Jr and Ryan Montgomery for most of the year now. I mean, he is technically still "committed" to Cal, and he is going to be visiting Cal again this weekend (perhaps the "buzz" you speak of?), so it wouldn't be a total shock if they hang on to him. That being said, as of a few hours ago, Oregon "insiders" have publicly stated they remain confident he will be a Duck (whatever that is worth).
Just a couple days ago, Jaron gave a very positive interview to Andrew Nemec regarding his visit to Oregon. He apparently had a leader in mind and doesn't think that will change, but asked to keep it private. The fact he said all of this right after his visit to Oregon, and the way he has gushed about the Ducks at every opportunity, certainly gives the impression that the Ducks were the team he had in mind as the leader at the time of the interview. Here is a portion of the article...
He even believes he now knows where he wants to go, stating that his current - and final? - mindset is unlikely to change.
"I don’t think I’ll change my mind (from my current leader) unless I see something outstanding from a different place," he said.
Sagapolutele asked to keep exactly who that leader is private until he locks in his final choice.

Ok, but if he is currently committed to Cal, wouldn't that mean they are his current leader? His comment about not changing from his current leader would still apply.gogreen55 wrote: Wed Nov 20, 2024 10:08 amlmduck wrote: Wed Nov 20, 2024 8:25 am There seems to be some buzz in the twitterverse that he will stay committed to Cal.

Not necessarily. I would put "committed" in quotes since it is a misnomer in this case. He "committed" to Cal before he had better options. Since his performance at the camp opened up other opportunities, he has publicly said he is open to changing his mind. That is being "committed" in name only, but has no real meaning. Vander Ploog was "committed" to Washington...until he wasn't. Following his visit to Oregon, the Oregon insiders viewed the Ducks as the leader in his recruitment, despite the fact he was still publicly "committed" to the Dawgs. There is really no difference between the Ploog situation and the Sagapolutele situation. I am not saying the Ducks are a lock though.squintsdd wrote: Wed Nov 20, 2024 10:15 am Ok, but if he is currently committed to Cal, wouldn't that mean they are his current leader? They also wear the 8 to represent the 8 major islands of Hawaii (although only 7 are inhabited) in addition to the 808 area code reference. This is definitely a pipeline situation that Oregon is and will continue to take advantage of (so long as top ranked QBs continue to rise out of the Pacific Islands...)Duck07 wrote: Sun Nov 03, 2024 11:30 am Something that's been on my mind about Marcus, Dillon, #8 and Hawaii QBs is that when we created the 808 Mariota facemask, there's the obvious connection of 8-O-8. I agree that it should be a connection we always try to favor and I'm excited to see who rises to the top next year as I'm not sure we'll be bringing in a Portal QB but go after OL and DB's instead.AutzenMember wrote: Mon Nov 25, 2024 12:08 pmThey also wear the 8 to represent the 8 major islands of Hawaii (although only 7 are inhabited) in addition to the 808 area code reference.
