If Mehringer is in fact the OC, I feel like he also moves to QB coach. He was a QB in college, and has been a QB coach at a couple of prior spots. Plus, it honestly just makes the most sense to have your OC have that close connection with the QB. I haven't done any analysis on how QBs have done at his prior spots, but those were Rutgers, New Mexico, and JMU in 2014, which aren't really hotbeds of QB talent.

Why would he become the qb coach? Qb is the most important position, and I’d like the best man for that job coaching it. Indiana has a qb coach, that isn’t the play caller OC.

I'm not saying he has to be, but often it makes the most sense and it's the ideal scenario to have that tight relationship between QB and coordinator. Shanahan didn't have any background playing or coaching QB, so makes sense he wouldn't be the QB coach. Their QB coach is a co-OC, so I suppose you could do something similar at Oregon by bringing in a guy to be the QB coach and Co-DC. I can just see why Mehringer would make most sense based on his background as a QB and QB coach. He might also be the best man for the job. I couldn't tell ya.

I haven't watched Raiola play as much as others have, but I know he can sling it and I know he plays with a lot of heart. I also know he has a ton of upside, and that a QB like him won't be coming here with the goal of riding the pine. Yes, if Dante comes back, then obviously he has to be ok with potentially sitting for a year... but make no mistake, when spring ball starts, Riola's goal will be to take Dante's job -- and he just might have the talent to do so. I think there's a TON of value in that. Dante's biggest issue is wilting when the pressure is highest. He needs to spend this offseason feeling real pressure to fight for his job. He'll be far better for it when next season starts, or he won't, in which case Riola might be better suited for the responsibility.

Or maybe Riola finally gets behind our superior O-line with all of those weapons and receiver and TE and is simply BETTER than Moore? Who knows.

I see this as a massive win that will make us better no matter who's under center next season.

Interesting: Dylan Raiola is actually 15 days older than Dante Moore. How probable is it that he signed on to sit for a year? I don't believe that Dante would come back without some kind of assurance that he is the starter, but I do wonder at signing another QB the same age. Unless Raiola just really wants that bump from being at QBU.

He broke his fibula so he's got a fair amount of rehabbing to do even if it's suggested he'll be ready for the Spring but I do think this is a clear case of Oregon being QBU unless we find out that Dante is leaving. Oregon Marketing probably also helps our cause too.

I don't think he's got some amazing arm between strength and accuracy but Dan likes him enough to bring him on board. My hope though is that the 2027 starter is Akili.
