I will agree, from a D perspective, we underachieved greatly in 2008. That's philosophy, we would sell out on the run, with LB and DB support, then get torched on play-action pass. It was disgusting and very hard to sit through games like Arizona and BSU, even though we beat UA.dthomas=ddixon wrote:
So why, when we have a Defensive backfield made up of 3 first day NFL picks & another likely late rounder, did we get picked apart through the air all season in 08? The Dline was really good that year. We were top 25 in run D & Reed and Tukuafu were all over QBs. Thats because of coaching.
EVERY team would be great if every position had all 4-5*s but thats completely unrealistic. We aren't SC or Texas or Florida. To say that thats the solution is just silly. Of course our D would be good if we were loaded with 4 & 5*s. Duh.
Next years Dline will be good. We have a lot of veteran size & strength coming back. Its not next year that is the problem. Its once all those guys graduate after next year. We will need some DTs to step in. Again, we don't need DT recruits for next year, its the years after next.
However, with less returning talent in the secondary and D-line we actually played better Defense in 2009, until the latter part of these season, which I attribute to a combination of playing the better teams in the conference (i.e. SC, Stanford, UA, OSU), and late-season cumulative wear and tear.
The better performance is also due to Coaching changes as well, new D-line coach Azz and Kelly's influence...
