If this team had a consistent shooting touch inside 12 feet, the season would look much better right now.

We're still in last place, but Belloti is going to see this winning as improvement over last season and give Kent another year. I hope I'm wrong.

They miss so many close-in shots. If they would make half of those, I bet they have a couple more wins in the Pac-10.woundedknees wrote:If this team had a consistent shooting touch inside 12 feet, the season would look much better right now.

Re: Oregon @ UCLA
Great win today, but still think Kent is fighting an uphill battle and he has to win the Pac-10 tourney to still be around next year.
I'm not a Kent hater like some, but I still think that MB and major boosters know that once the luster of the new arena wears off it's going to still only be 5000 people at the games. That's not what they have in mind with building a state of the art arena. I just think a lot of fans are over EK as coach, and it's time to move on. A new arena and a new coach will get the fans excited and to the games, and if the season in a 15-16 win season fans will still be at the games. But if EK is there and it's that same type of season, then it's going to cost the UO a lot more, because of the lack of ticket sales. But that's my personal view of things of things right now.

If Porter had given us senior leadership like this all season, I think we would be a tournament team. That might sound silly, but it's amazing what one consistent player can do. We have some talented players, but we just haven't put it all together.

Then again, if other teams knew they had to respect the inside game, Porter might actually have been open on some of those contested threes he missed.
This was a sad spectacle.
If the gladiators had performed this inconsistently, Nero couldn't have filled the Coliseum.

Good point. I think the word "if" is one my favorite words in sports.

This is spot-on. Oregon's better this year than last, so Kilkenny's dubious "must show improvement" clause he handed off to Bellotti concerning Kent has already been met, but Matt Court will either be one of two things for the university: an amazing, state-of-the-art arena that prints money for the athletic department, or an amazing, state-of-the-art arena that hemorrhages money because nobody cares enough to show up.buckmarkduck wrote:Great win today, but still think Kent is fighting an uphill battle and he has to win the Pac-10 tourney to still be around next year.

A losing record isn't the worst thing for a program; fan apathy is. If Mac Court was rockin' and we lost games anyway, Kent's job would be secure based on his overall body of work. But combine losing with lackluster attendance figures, and that's a death sentence for anybody, let alone a university with an insanely expensive arena they need to start paying off.
Oregon is clearly improving, but are they improving enough to bankroll a season's worth of season ticket purchases on? Unlikely. I think the decision to remove Kent will go above Mike Bellotti, anyway, as any good ol' fashion controversial coaching change does. Boosters control athletic departments, not athletic directors. We take heat for that stuff because our boosters have public faces, but every school in the country does the same thing, only with unknown billionaires calling the shots.

Re: Oregon @ UCLA
If the plan in the athletic department is to fire Kent, there's a scenario that's very possible that may throw a wrench in the works.
If the Ducks sweep the Washington schools next week at home and then split a pair of games in the tourney, that would put them at 8-10 in conference and 17-15 overall. They would finish their final six games with a 5-1 record and that would probably be enough to get them an invitation to the NIT.
It would be extremely hard for Bellotti to fire Kent if that happens.

If Porter had been doing this even half the time during the pac-10, we'd be in the middle of the pack. Where the hell has this been the last month?
Kent's job could be saved IMO with a sweep over the Washington schools..

Matt court is going to sell out next year regardless on how bad this team is or if Ernie is still the coach or not.oregontrack wrote:This is spot-on. Agree. If Oregon sweeps UW/WSU and does well in the Pac 10 tourney then it would be very difficult to fire Kent.SuperDuck wrote:If the plan in the athletic department is to fire Kent, there's a scenario that's very possible that may throw a wrench in the works.

Re: Oregon @ UCLA
Not to diminish the wins, but USC and UCLA are as bad this season as they have been in a long time. Oregon State won today at USC. So while it's nice to win(especially on the road), these aren't remarkable wins like Kent and his supporters will make them out to be.

Re: Oregon @ UCLA
It will take donors stepping up with Arena Fees for season tickets next year for Kent to save his job. How many more wins will that take? He does not likely have enough chances left. Will sweeping Wash and WSU bring fans back I doubt it. Remember I was told Kent won't likely make it to coach in the Pac 10 tourny. A sweep might allow him to coach in it, perhaps. But that was the reason He was going to be out by the tourny was to avoid him making a run in the Pac 10 and then having to oust him with some mild increase in support.
