When Banning High School (Banning, Ca.) football player Derron Smith was named "most valuable defensive back" at the National Underclassmen Elite 100 football combine held July 6th at the Home Depot Center in Carson, it was a well known fact that his stock would rise dramatically.
Smith has since been rated the number three (Class of 2010) cornerback prospect in the nation by the ULT 100 behind

The highlight reel reminds me quite a bit of how TJ Ward plays. I would offer this kid a schollie and lock him up right away. If he wants to be a Duck that bad, I want him to be a Duck that bad. Attitude is 90% of the battle and he's got it.
I think the #1 thing I liked about his highlight reel is that he rarely was seen celebrating big plays... he acted like he was supposed to do what he just did, was expecting it, and wasn't interested in taunting anyone. I like that attitude a LOT and want it on our team!
1. His team, Palm Beach Central, is a Class 6A team, which is the biggest division in Florida.
2. Right now, he has the size of a CB, so I would bet on CB. Only way he becomes a safety is if he gains a lot of weight, which is possible for college kids.

I love it when kids self-recruit (Masoli being an example), they tend to be very determined and hard working. They know what they want and they won't be denied.
I'm happy to hear that these recruits are so much more familiar with our program than even 5 years ago.

I sure hope that CK offers him a scholarship for 2010 as soon as possible. Not only does he appear to be very talented, he also REALY wants to be a Duck!
Mops... any room for this kid in your "Top 10 Most Wanted for 2010" list?

Jean's teammate this past season was Jon Bostic, a 4* LB who played in the Army AA game and is committed to Miami, so him and his team are used to good competition down in their area. I think that it would be a coup to get him out of an area that is controlled by Miami. He would be a good pick-up for the Ducks.

Sound familiar? Ethan Grant said something to that effect when we first started recruiting him.
A lot of people are leary, me included, about getting excited about this early interest from kids cuz it seems like this happens every year. The difference though, between this year & the past years is there are kids this year from all over who have Oregon as their LEADER, not just one of the many teams on their list. That to me, shows that this year will be different,

I think also we can somewhat contribute as people who follow recruiting closely to keep talking about kids that we have COMMITTED to us rather than just who is still out there considering us but not committed yet. It seems like we get a commitment from a player, then we push him aside and start immediately talking about the next guy we COULD get. I'm hoping that we all take the time to think about what we got coming in and make these commits feel like they are part of the family and not just some piece of meat.

So how does the transfer of this knowledge, being this interview, which says if he gets an offer he could commit on the spot, actually get to the coaches? It's nice for us to know, but isn't it more important the coaches know about this kid's intentions? Is there anyway for Mops to contact the coaches about these interviews and let them know how serious they are about Oregon? Because it sounds like this kid is a good enough player and considering all the attention Kelly gave Boyd who wasn't nearly as enthusiastic about Oregon as this kid, he should have a talk with Mops about this one and all the interviews he does. Keep up the good work by the way.

He said in the article that he just recently got in contact with Chip & Chip sounded really excited to hear from him. If there's guys out there that want to be Ducks, the coaches will find them.

I promise you that if Mops knows these kids are interested in the Ducks the coaching staff absolutely does. This is a big part of what the coaches are paid to do...it's not like the coaches just go to Scout and see who's listed as having interest in the Ducks.
