Come on guys, which one of us DIDN'T do stupid things like this when we were 16? I would bet many of us could put together lists that are as stupid or worse.monster wrote:NCDucks09 wrote: However, bringing a GUN to school implies an 'INTENT' to do harm, which is much worse than doing something stupid that might unintentionally do harm.
No, it does not imply "intent," but enjoy debating the level of stupid that applies to your actions.

My understanding is that it is only an NCAA issue if Gaines was convicted of a felony in this case... If it was a misdemeanor, or the charges were dropped... no issue.

Not me!! In all honesty, I can say that I did not do anything this stupid, not even close! Bringing a gun to school is a VERY SERIOUS offense, not to be taken lightly.RanDux wrote:Come on guys, which one of us DIDN'T do stupid things like this when we were 16? However, I also believe that kids can be taught right from wrong and sincerely hope that this gets cleared up and that Gaines is able to come to UO. If this and his hot temper issue have been resolved he will be an asset to the team.

Goducks for clarity you do realize this was a pellet gun the modern equivalent of a bb gun (air pressure) not an actual firearm (bullets propelled by an explosive charge). The differences between the two are both practical and legal. Not trying to get under anyone’s skin but there is a big difference between the two.

My friends used to shoot eachother with pellet and bee-bee guns with paintball masks on, and the worst that ever happened was a little flesh damage. They'll break the skin, but not much else. It never looked like fun to me so I always passed...

Depends on the gun itself... I was shot in the leg with a pellet gun that damaged the femoral artery, even though it did not break the skin.
On two occasions while I was a deputy sheriff, people were arrested for poaching deer with modern pellet guns (.177 calider).

We are going a bit over board on this issue. The kid brought a pellet gun to school when he was 16. My kids have been shooting bb and pellet guns in the woods since they were little. I could understand the issue if we were talking about a deadly weapon but you can do the same damage with a sling shot. IT WAS A PELLET GUN!!!

Re: Tyrece Gaines NCAA Issue?
As I said in an earlier post, it all depends on the charges, and/or conviction... No felony. no issue.
It also has not been proven what the issue is. It may not have anything to do with the pellet gun issue.

Sure a lot of speculation on the topic. Maybe he owes on parking tickets or can"t find a library book. We should let those in the know resolve the issue with out fanning the fire. I'm sure we will find out what the real issue is sooner or later. If he can qualify & contribute to the program without becoming a distraction (same as all members of the team), then I don't care what the issue is.

Re: Tyrece Gaines NCAA Issue?
Intent is the issue. When I went to high school we would have our rifles in the back window of our trucks because we all went hunting after school. Alot of us would have .22's in our rigs most of the time at the least. Does anyone know if he took it INTO school, had it in his rig, in his locker...alot of different issues that we don't know, and honestly I don't care about. Had he waslked into school and threatened people, that's another issue. For all we know he had someone in school that wanted to buy his dad's ancient bb gun that haden't worked for 15 years...we JUST DONT KNOW...so why speculate?goducks wrote:Not me!! Re: Tyrece Gaines NCAA Issue?
All that I can say is that I was a middle school teacher in Hillsboro back in the 1980's-90's and several kids got expelled for bringing weapons on campus; bb guns, pellet guns, knives, etc... Thankfully the administration did not take it lightly. The law in Oregon now states that no guns are allowed in schools or on school grounds.
It is unlawful to possess a firearm loaded or unloaded in a public building. “Public building” means a hospital, capitol building, a public or private school, college or university, a courthouse, city hall, or residence of any state official and the grounds adjacent to each such building. This restriction does not apply to individuals licensed under Oregon law to carry concealed weapons.
Ore. Rev. Stat. §§ 166.170 - 166.630.

So we've degraded this thread into a debate about guns... Welcome to perhaps the second most contentious topic of debate in the United States next to abortion. The problem with Tyrece LOI is all speculation at this point. I would rather get any further information from reputable sources.
