Players like Cavaille & Showalter likely have conditional schollies meaning they are "on" and get financial assistance for some periods. I believe the coaches know of a few who will fall in the TRANSFER/LEAVE SCHOOL/ACADEMIC FAILURE category already. Don't know who they are or will be, but figure on a few here. SUBTRACT 2

My guess is 1 player from our class will be asked to grayshirt. Hard to say who it will be, but hoping it isn't necessary as that player can resign with another school. Players like Hawkins or Arden come to mind here. SUBTRACT 1

So, with Vinny's count of 88, lets be optimistic and add in Gaines & Tuinei to bring it to 90. Subtract the 5 above and we're dead on the total. Obviously if Brown wants to come we'll somehow make room, but not bullish on that possibility. Furthermore, if a player like Chris Metcalf suddenly becomes a Duck in the next few wks (esp if prior to Gaines & Tuinei), that's a sure indicator that the staff believes at least 1 of those JC WRs isn't coming. Personally I don't see Metcalf signing as many feel things will likely get worked out with SC or we just don't have room. Very good player, but not a big need.

My roommate senior year was on a "books-only" scholarship for the track team. Does football have anything like that, or is it all or nothing?

I wonder if the walk-ons that received scholarships last year were only a one year deal because we had extras. Would be kind of lame if they lost their scholarships but I don't think they received them until we missed on recruits and they lost some teammates. Just a thought.

You also have to remember that scholorships have to be "renewed" each year. Just because a player is on sholorship one year doesn't mean he is guaranteed that scholorship next year.

I'd look for Justin Roper to possibly transfer, even if Thomas redshirts next season Roper knows that he won't play over Thomas two seasons from now, and I'm sure Roper would like to find a school where he can start. He would be a great QB at a school that doesn't have their QB's run the ball very much.

Are you sure that Flint was on schollie in '08? He very well might have been, but I don't ever remember reading about him receiving a scholarship. All of the articles I remember reading still referred to him as a walk-on when he took over the starting role late in the season.

I wonder what the odds are that Padilla beats Flint out for the place kicking duties? I know he has a stronger leg, but I don't really know much about his accuracy. If Flint does win the starting job from the beginning next year, it is going to be hard to justify not giving him a scholarship. I don't know what his family financial situation is like (maybe they are rich and it doesn't really matter much?), but I would hate to see an opening day starting player not be rewarded with a scholarship due to this apparent scholarship crunch. Dedicating 5 scholarships to specialists (Flint, Padilla, Bowlin, Rice, Taylor) would be a lot though.

There are no partial scholarships in college football.

Unless a player messes up in some way, this shouldn't really be an option though. Recruiting a player on a full scholarship and then yanking it away from them later in their career due to a scholarship crunch, when they have done everything asked of them in the classroom/on the field, would be a horrible precedent for the Oregon coaches to set.

I'm pretty sure that Flint went on scholarship during the '08 season. It would have been some time during the season after he beat out Evensen as he was still a walk-on before. I do recall reading this occurred for him.

I think what will happen with the 3 scholarship kickers (Flint, Padilla & Bowlin) is they would likely prefer to RS Bowlin. Secondly, Flint doesn't have a strong leg, so I'd be very surprised if he ends up doing KO duties. He'll certainly be the fave to retain the FG/PAT duties, but expect Padilla to give him a run because they'll need to use DP in some capacity having no RS left. Hopefully DP has a strong enough leg to win the KO job and if he beats out Morgan for the rest, then Flint would almost certainly not stay on schollie. However, none of those possible configurations really matter as Flint will almost for sure be on schollie when Fall enrollment starts, thus 3 kickers on scholarship counting in the 85 total (4 with Rice).

Well, if you figure Flint will be on scholarship, then this will be even more of a crunch since I didn't have him included in my original post.

So, if Gaines and Tuinei both make it in and all the recruits qualify academically, that would kick the number up to 91. Subtract the conditional scholarships of Cavaille and Showalter and that takes it down to 89. That leaves 4 more scholarships that need to be cleared one way or another.

all scholarships are yr to yr. They do not have to renewed.

I'm pretty sure Taylor's not on schollie and I would bed Flint won't be either.

Zach Taylor is on scholarship. He was part of the 2008 recruiting class and had multiple offers as a long snapper.
