What is really weird about Heaps, is that he plays in a spread option offense in highschool. And the person he is most compared to is Drew Brees, who played in a spread offense at Purdue. Heaps isn't this 6-4 230lb prototypical drop back passer. He recently came out with a top 10 in which Oregon wasn't mentioned. He wants to commit early and BYU looks to be the school to beat.GoDuckYourself wrote:Heaps is more of a drop back pocket passer and not a great fit for our system. Though I'm sure we'll take him, given the laundry list of places he's already looking into one commonality is that none of them are spread systems. I'd say both parties are looking in other directions. That said, there are a coulpe recievers there that we are going hard after.

Heaps has been performing horribly at camps lately.

I can vouch for that...not only is it not cheap to get back to Eugene, but traveling from the South you can plan on it taking a full day of travel each waywoundedknees wrote:Out here on their own dime is a huge thing, IMO.
It aint cheap to visit Eugene from the east bank.

Actually, it is not as bad as you'd think, flights are cheap from Florida to Oregon. $250-350 into Eugene, or they could fly into Portland from Miami, it is cheaper than you think.... just over $200, rent a car, short drive down and done.

I don't want the headache of having him come here and leaving on a 2 year LDS mission....get the next Dixon, instead.Mops wrote:There is a rumor that Heaps came down to the Oregon camp last summer and was expecting to be given lots of attention and in the end an early offer. When he didn't get the offer he was upset by that.
I don't think he fits our offense all that well. He's a great talent but hed be wasted in our offense. I think both sides know that.

Hopefully they will enjoy their visit while they're out here. It would really help Oregon establish a name in FL if they could get one of these players. I think Meline is going to be a higher ranked prospect but McCartney is not going to be far behind.

Uhh.... Not to be negative but when I see "mentor" I think of the Butler/Brown thing. Hiopefully not another case like that.Mops wrote:Have been told both are working with their mentor to get out here within the next month or so and take a visit to Oregon. Both have Oregon listed in the top 2 now.

Considering our scholarship situation in 2010, wouldn't it be a decent idea to go for kids who want to do the LDS mission thing? It's like having 2 gray shirt years. We could get more commits than available scholies.
Not saying we want a boatload of Mormons just because they may go on missions, just saying if they are top talent, why not.

Back to the thread topic:
Per Scout regarding McCartney at Florida 7 on 7 drills recently
They call Ivan McCartney "Sticks" and you can se why. He's very thin but don't let that fool you -- the kid is very explosive and looks like a major playaker. He was on the receiving end of many Eugene Smith touchdowns at Miramar this past season and was on the receiving end of a lot of big plays at this workout. He's a major playmaker who will soon have lots of major offers.

It's crazy how quickly all of this is happening for the 2010 class. These two are right near the top of my want list for this class.

Re: Ted Meline and Ivan McCartney
I watched the State championship game of Washington with Heaps playing and I was not at all impressed. What came across was he was a pretty small guy, only looked about 6' even. And he didn't seem to make the best decisions either, as he had two bad picks if I remember right. I thought his teammates Gino simone and future stud Kasson Williams looked more impressive. Williams is a guy we should give a lot of attention not Heaps. Unfortunately, I believe his dad was a Dawg.

McCartney really does look exactly like his cousin Chad Johnson running around in the video I saw. Granted, it was just passing drills and not actual game action, but I am still convinced this guy is going to be a bigtime player.

I'm a little giddy about these guys coming out here, adding Ted and Ivan would be amazing and they are coming out because of their buddy loved it and committed...VinnyKnuckles wrote:McCartney really does look exactly like his cousin Chad Johnson running around in the video I saw. Re: Ted Meline and Ivan McCartney
There was a post today from Baron Flenory on Scout talefeathers about McCartney not being pleased with the ducks "throwing out offers to a lot of people in South Florida".
Obviously Meline is about the only other WR in FL that I'm aware of at this point, so hopefully CK talks to him and shows him about the misunderstanding. Hopefully though he understands with a limited number of spots to take advantage of his chance early.
