The insanity of recruiting, NIL, and mid-season coaching changes are just 3 reasons off the top of my head I could think of leaving for the NFL.Duck07 wrote: Tue Dec 02, 2025 3:39 pm Daboll as a college OC sounds fun; HC I wouldn't be so sure of.
Hartline going to PSU would be pretty wild as I've also read the Titans may want Ryan Day (though not really sure why he'd give up what he's got going other than OSU fans being overwhelming)

The lack of awareness that not all schools function on the same schedule is maddening to me.StevensTechU wrote: Tue Dec 02, 2025 10:26 amI'm too lazy to dig it up, but the calendar comments mirror more-or-less exactly the comments Lanning made preseason on somebody's podcast.Duck07 wrote: Tue Dec 02, 2025 10:05 am I'm throwing this little piece from TTU's coach since it seems somewhat relevant to the larger discussion at hand. I wouldn't be against his proposals.

With Hartline now off the table for Penn St,, their search seems to be in a bad place. Where to mow? An NFL coordinator?
Chip Kelly? /s
This is worse than Oregon's last basketball coaching search.

Add in the transfer rules and portal to that list.bellsduck wrote: Tue Dec 02, 2025 9:51 pmThe insanity of recruiting, NIL, and mid-season coaching changes are just 3 reasons off the top of my head I could think of leaving for the NFL.Duck07 wrote: Tue Dec 02, 2025 3:39 pm Daboll as a college OC sounds fun; HC I wouldn't be so sure of.

Hartline to USF, Stein to Kentucky, Tosh to Cal.
Just curious who you think made the best choice and has the best chance of being successful out of those 3.

I would disagree with this being decided and unfixable. Not saying it will in the near term, but as student athletes continue to drift to more of a professional status, however that is defined now or in the future, it also allows that relationship to be defined contractually to set certain limitations (or penalties) that support the overall benefit of the FBS and the athletes.StevensTechU wrote: Tue Dec 02, 2025 10:26 am

Well if Stein really thought of UK as his dream job then I think he and Tosh made the best choice from their respective positions but I think Hartline has a chance to parlay his job into a much bigger position than Cal or UK.UOducksTK1 wrote: Wed Dec 03, 2025 10:20 am Hartline to USF, Stein to Kentucky, Tosh to Cal.

Stein has a premium conference but is the basketball school there so turning it around will be toughest for him.
Tosh seems like the biggest Wild-Card in that if he's successful he could actually turn Cal into the state's best team with the easiest chance to the Playoffs every year or he could just be another typical Cal coach.
Whereas I think Hartline recognizes that if he wants the OSU job he's going to need to wait until Ryan Day is tired of the place or they're tired of him and this is his chance to develop as a HC now and either go back to his school or else take over a prime gig in the region in a few years time if he's successful.
To that end I think Tosh chose best followed by Hartline and then Stein. I've already mentioned that if this is his place than all the power to Stein, but from an outside perspective, if we go on a good run in the Playoffs or win it all, his name would be 1A or 1B for most every job next year.

Yeah it seems Tosh has best chance to succeed. Cal is a good fit for him. I feel like Hartline going to USF is meh. I figured he could get a better gig.Duck07 wrote: Wed Dec 03, 2025 11:51 amWell if Stein really thought of UK as his dream job then I think he and Tosh made the best choice from their respective positions but I think Hartline has a chance to parlay his job into a much bigger position than Cal or UK.UOducksTK1 wrote: Wed Dec 03, 2025 10:20 am Hartline to USF, Stein to Kentucky, Tosh to Cal.

I think there's real value in taking one of the better G5 jobs in order to get a better P4 job. How much longer will Josh Heupel be the HC in Knoxville and in the case of Hartline, he's able to start building his own coaching chops away from Ohio State and doing so in arguably the best recruiting ground in the country.

It's fair. I was amazed Kiffin was able to get where he is now after USC. FAU and Ole Miss were uphill battles too.Duck07 wrote: Wed Dec 03, 2025 12:13 pmI think there's real value in taking one of the better G5 jobs in order to get a better P4 job. Chris Klieman retiring at Kansas State at 58. Kirk Ferentz coming back to coach next year when he'll turn 71.

Tosh to Cal now being reported as a done deal.
Interesting move elsewhere is ex-Florida coach Billy Napier is going to James Madison.

After reports earlier that Blake Baker would be staying at LSU as Kiffin's DC, it sounds like he will be Tulane's next Head Coach.

Tosh has the recruiting skills to bring the talent needed to build a winner in Berkely. He just needs to surround himself with a solid staff who can both recruit, advise and coach. Do that and I can see him going to Bowl games within 1-2 years.UOducksTK1 wrote: Wed Dec 03, 2025 11:53 amYeah it seems Tosh has best chance to succeed. Cal is a good fit for him. Re: Coaching Hot Seat
How difficult is the situation at Oregon State and Wazzu right now? WSU's coach is leaving to become the coach of Iowa State after just one season on the Palouse. Historically, those are comparable programs, but with conference realignment Iowa State has the resources to take a guy who just began his contract with the Cougars.
