Williams explaining why he chose USC:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SeKawnN0TE

Keeps saying over and over 'it was a business decision'. Seems to be impressed with the connections one can make at USC. Only made the decision a few days before signing day.

I guess I'm having trouble seeing where the Oregon staff screwed up here. I think he went to USC because they are USC.

I so want to kick SC's ass when the Dux meet up with them. Clay Helton....pffft. He is lucky that he has so much talent to prop him up, because he can't coach himself out of a wet paper bag. Darnold regressed big time under his coaching staff. His extension is the best thing that could have happened to us and UCLA will own the south division and LA in two years.

Can't fault the staff for being lied to or losing out on a kid who took the money. Williams supposedly was on the verge of committing to Oregon a number of different times. If true, we could maybe have something to say about not closing the deal those times, and we don't know how much it hurt not having that big recruiting weekend right before early signing day. We might have been able to get him to sign on early signing. And then there is the issue of having a player back out of his commitment a number of times and not moving to a back-up plan. But the kid lied. What are you gonna do?

Yeah, can't blame the coaches for that. We thought he was coming because the coaches thought he was coming.

But context is important. Coaches didn't have enough backup options available when Williams, Ezeike and Battle all defected.

That explains his twitter post a few days before signing day where he wrote business decision follow by a red jersey. He's probably thinking if he doesn't play football what could he do career wise, hence mentioning network, business program, and business decision. USC staff probably sold him hard on that but i feel that the b-school at USC isn't better than that at UO and he should have took a deeper look into those reasons if they were important to him. In his home state of California alone, Stanford and Cal are much better options than USC in those categories, while UCLA's business program is about on par with that at USC but UCLA has a better general undergrad program. Not sure what his test scores were, but imho, any school that doesn't have much higher and difficult academic requirements for matriculation compared to those of UO, doesn't have a much better academic program than UO. As for the networks and unlimited resources part regarding USC, wish the kid had some advisors that told him those "networks" aren't going to help him much after college football unless he balls like Reggie Bush did at USC. He'll still have to compete based on his own skills and ability like everyone else and won't be hired or close a deal just because he was a former USC football player.

This is absolutely true, and is what burns me more than missing on Williams. I know a lot of folks think people are freaking out because we missed. People who watch closely are freaking out because we got caught with our pants down. I'm just reading today that we offered Andre Hunt right before signing day. He's a kid who wanted an Oregon offer all along. Wanted a trip. He went to Nebraska even with the late offer because he didn't like that we wanted him at the 11th hour. We put all our eggs in those baskets. Great if it works. When it doesn't, there's reason to be critical.

Doesn't the question then become is Andre Hunt significantly better than JJ Tucker? Both apparently were backup plans and, based on the very late offer to Tucker, it doesn't appear they would have taken both. If Hunt and Tucker have similar abilities one could argue the staff did have a backup plan.

I fully expect next year will be a much smoother operation.

Business decision means we don't have any WRs in the NFl like SC does.

I bet they would have taken both. But Hunt wasn't interested.

I figure "business decision" means I'm getting paid by bagmen. I'm sure that's what happened. Yeah, I'm accusing with no proof.

I also think that was the selling point. Williams was on record that he loved the sports marketing program at Oregon and planned to work at Nike after his football career. Obviously, that would be best served at UO, but we currently have what; 0 WR's in the NFL(maybe Huff?).

I don't think so. They wanted 4-6 WRs in the class. They got three. This jives with Cristobals comments

Cristobal wanted 4 but would take 6 if they were the right ones.

This is what I got as well. Actually, if you look at Oregon's history, high-rated WRs have not done well at Oregon.
