Uh yes it can. The teams issue isn’t playcalling, it’s execution. Unless you’ve reviewed the film already and have a breakdown of the play calls and why they were so poor.

lol you’re another one of those fans, “well if the players just execute”, we’ve been hearing that for a while, when will it fall on the coaches? The Oregon fan base is way too positive about the coaching staff; we see one of the worst coached games in Oregon history, and week 1 was far from good, it’s clear something is broken in the coaching staff, not sure if it’s Dan, Drew, or something else; but if we don’t see improvement by week 4 we’ll get blown out by USC and the season will be officially lost.

I never said any of that. I would put poor player execution squarely at the feet of the coaching staff. From the HC down to the position coaches who work most directly with the players. But wholesale scapegoating of coordinators when you don’t have any actual analysis to offer is both predictable and lazy.

Game planning and play design influence execution.

Play calling is only one part of a coordinators job.

Can only call the plays you practice ahead of time.

Thing is, last year we had two qualified coordinators. Now we have 0. On paper, this is the most talented Oregon roster ever.

But. The broadcast was such a dumpster fire it was even harder than usual to tell what was going on.

We'll see what happens @ USC. Good week to get Portland State.

Agreed. As I responded to OF4L, my issue is with the wholesale scapegoating of coordinators—their play calls specifically—without any real analysis as to why the plays failed or were the wrong calls in the first place. This is clearly a coaching staff issue though, I just don’t see any evidence that it’s poor play calling that is the issue.

Play calling sucked, but if you lose the trenches battle on both sides of the ball, play calling will always look bad.

Oh I agree 100%, I misunderstood sorry, lots of people are to blame. Like I said the only coach I feel confident in after today is Ross Douglas.

But if I had to fire a coach right now it would probably be Drew Mehringer followed by A’Lique Terry and Chris Hampton.

Something that’s been mentioned before is Lanning’s insistence on hiring young coaches. Look at the other elite programs and their staffs are filled with veteran coaches, many of them former HCs. I think Lanning made a big miscalculation by making both coordinator hires internally when neither of them have really proven themselves at this level.

By contrast, tOSU’s coordinators are both former NFL head coaches.

Yeah, and guys like that is demand respect, maybe it’s just me but really feels like the players don’t respect this coaching staff, and it also feels like they’re coddled as players like Dante weren’t forced to face the media.

I think Lanning is trying to instill (to future ambitious coaches, as he once was) the process of young coaches, getting their chance at bigger things if they join the Ducks, that their hiring will keep coaches in the fold for continuity. The major problem with that, is you have to understand that the Ducks have to vet the applicants properly. If they were questionable hires to begin with, then they will be questionable to move up the ranks. If you look at the perennial playoff teams, they have handed the reigns to coordinators with proven talent. This doesn’t mean Lanning and his coordinators won’t be good. But it is in stark contrast to the teams that want/have the horses/need to win now. The fact the Ducks have as much experience coming back this year, now honestly screams that Lanning needed to find the best coordinators out there. Lanning completely failed that fact. I love Lanning, but this was an egregious failure. It’s not out of the consideration that failures like this, lead to termination. I wouldn’t like it, but F*cking up possibly the best chances the Ducks have ever had, could have consequences.

I’ve probably missed this preciously discussed but has Mehringer called plays anywhere before? I’d so, where?

Stop hiring men who are actively conceiving and raising infants and babies. They are too distracted by lack of sleep to be effective in their jobs. Hire dudes whose children are paying rent and electricity bills.
