Actually, it was the old Baptists and Congregationalists that came up with the idea of separation of Church and State, so I don't think they had disdain for it.

I find the idea that we need some kind of government permission to get married utterly ridiculous. If I had to do it over again, I would probably skip the licensing part altogether, just on principle.

If marriage is based on religious precepts but we acknowledge the separation of church and state, why then would the government at any level issues 'marriage licenses?' If it not based on a religious ethos specific to heterosexuals, then how can you preclude a minority group from marrying?
The answer is, and I get the impression we're on the same page here, Govt has no business in the marriage business.

Both very solid choices
Have you tried Kona Koast Pipeline Porter? I like it better than Black Butte Porter.

Ah, but there still are some beneficial principles to glean. We need to hang it up and catch our breath from time to time. We're not built to go 7 days a week without giving it a rest.

Anybody care to talk Cuba? I've got something in common with Jay Z and Beyonce in that we all had permission from the US State Dept to visit!

I will! Our embargo of Cuba is bullshit. Economic warfare without any justification. Also, we've directed massive international terrorism against Cuba, mostly kept unknown to the American people. Castro is repressive, but the social welfare in Cuba is about on par with the United States, which is just stunning when you consider the relative wealth of both nations. I say lift the embargo and apologize for our vicious terrorism.

lol'd.

The title has our mascot's name. Plus Duck07's thread is probably one of the more interesting threads during the offseason.

Its a blockade, really. The US is afraid that by opening up trade with Cuba (our farmers in the Midwest have long protested their inability to trade basic crops for high-quality sugar and tobacco) that Cuba will show that it is possible to have other forms of government that work. Further, this is also a firm "anti-capitalist" stance and any criticism of Cuba openly ignores what Saudi Arabia does and has done yet they are key allies because of oil.

It is also not against the law to travel to Cuba. Cuba doesn't "have" to let you in, but there is no legal law on the books preventing anyone from going there. The Federal Reserve however says you cannot spend US Dollars in Cuba which is why you need permission from the state department. One of my favorite cities is Trinidad as the towns streets are not uniform so that when pirates would sack the city, they couldn't get out quickly! They've got a bell tower in the middle of the city you can scale to see how awkward the streets are. I also had zero problems using an internet cafe, which is something that I routinely hear as a criticism of the govt.

I've been there three times. Helped record an album down there, and my sis toured the country in a music festival...I would recommend making the trip to anyone looking for an escape from 24/7 commercialism and a simpler way of life (not to mention amazing music and beautiful people )

The women were amazing (especially the one I bought my cigars from!) but some of the food was unbelievable. When I was in Santa Clara I had fried malanga's which are a tuber similar to potatoes but only grow in particular climates like Cuba and DR. There is only one way to make black beans if you really want to make them tasty!
