I feel like I’m stuck on player development and discipline. This game could have been ~45-17 with a few less “oops” plays. The LBs were lost, the OL was awful in the first half, the DL (especially the middle) was on their heels. These are positions with starters who have grown up at Oregon.

Just heard, watching the Cal/UCLA game, the announcers noted injuries on the O-line contributed to some issues. So, possibly players weren’t ruled out, but held out for precautionary reasons. Might make sense. Don’t remember seeing Iuli play. But yeah, BS on Lanning saying Mehringer called a good game. Neither O or D coaches called any semblance of a good game, including Lanning himself.

That is the most defeated I’ve ever seen Lanning in a press conference.

Lanning is not the kind of communicator to tip his hand if he knows he doesn’t have the horses. He is very good at being optimistic and building potentially overmatched players up (see: 2022 season)

However, he is also the type of coach that has no problem calling out things that aren’t acceptable to him, even in big wins.

Today was an interesting combo of him trying to say all the right things but with a “what the eff was that and where the hell did it come from” demeanor and look. This was much more of a postgame presser mood like the JMU playoff game.

I think this performance today completely caught him off guard and pissed him off because he didn’t see it coming, based on the prep the Ducks had this week. i expect that him being pissed off is going to lead into some marked changes and improvements next week. Not a good Doctor visit this week.

I’ll say it again, I think the team was tight for whatever reason. Not like they were believing their hype, but like the weight of the expectations was having an effect.

Compare the BSU postgame to the Idaho postgame from two years ago. Dan was downright chipper in that one and they almost lost to an FCS school…then rattled off 12 straight wins.

We are going to grow and continue to get better. They now see how the kids react under live, real-game bullets. They have tape to teach off of other than practices or scrimmages.

Keep the faith.

Dan is the Man

Indiana barely beat Old Dominiom in week 1 last year and Old Dominion’s RB ran on them for 218 yards.

Also, not to disparage Eastern Washington, but in 2000 little brother almost lost to them in Corntucky and by the end of that season little brother was playing better than either the ‘Noles and the Hokies and likely would have beaten either by 10.

Sorry for the random straws to my peeps from the Harvard Of The Palouse.

I feel like I’m alone here. Coach Meh showed the ability to make in-game adjustments. We put up 500 yards of offense on a team that is a borderline playoff team. We put up both points and yardage. The OLine is off to its typical slow gelling start, but it’ll come around.

I was most discouraged by our front 7 on defense for the first 2.5 quarters, but it too showed in-game improvement.

Of all the things that drove me insane was stupid penalties, missed blocks, and missed tackles. The rushing TD allowed on the next play following the muffed punt reception where Mixon just shouldered his attempted tackle instead of wrapping up was so bad.

All in all, I saw improvement on both sides of the ball. We were down 10 at half and ended up plus 7. That’s a 17 point swing in 1/2 a game. It’s what Vegas expected for 4 quarters. Do that twice and we win by 34.

I’m kind of conflicted, because I hear a lot of the “oh if the ducks clean things up they’ll be fine” but I felt like that is something duck fans were saying all of last season, and the team, particularly the offense, just never peaked and were able to clean up those issues.

As much as I hated Drew in the first half, I thought he called a much better second half, less gadget plays and just throwing at Boise State. If Will called plays like that all season last year the Peach Bowl is closer. The only drive I didn’t like from him was late in the 4th up 7 when the offense got the ball back with about 5 min to go, I felt that would’ve been a great time to stay aggressive and go ice the game rather than go conservative. But outside of that I liked his second half, if it wasn’t for a bad overthrow by Dante and McLellan falling on a trick play (that I actually liked) then that’s 8 extra points and the game doesn’t end so close.

OF4L - I literally have never seen you happy.

You are passionate

You know the game

You love your Ducks

You are a very tough grader

But in the last 3 seasons our ONLY losses are to teams that made the Natty or were the Champs and those teams were a combined 44-3 (one of those losses being to us)

Last year we made the SEMIFINALS with a very young team that had “things to clean up” and we kicked the ass of the media darlings that were Texas Tech.

At some point, isn’t it worth taking these things into consideration?

I know many of y’all hate the bubble screen but it’s a staple of the offense because we have decent perimeter blockers and a bevy of wideouts with elite wiggle that can make you miss.

The WORST case scenario out of those plays is usually a no gain or small loss and that is predicated on having DB’s that are sure open field tacklers and can easily defeat blocks. Lanning/Stein/Mehringer believe in their guys to out execute in those matchups.

The MEDIUM case is the blocks hold and the DB’s whiff and we stay on schedule to the tune of 4-8 yard gains.

The BEST case is the DB’s eventually bite on the bubble fake and we see the sideline routes like the one late in the game to Jamari or the trick play that Jmac slipped on the pass from EStew.

The RARE ELITE case is when a DC like Knowles at tOSU has crazy hubris and expects us to do it all game and we burn them over the top repeatedly.

We base a lot of options on those passes because we have the personnel to use it to our advantage.

I dunno, over 500 yards of offense is pretty good, especially with no QB running plays, which I assume will happen later in the season. Coach Mehringer didn't have a lot to do with all the costly mistakes the ducks made. I imagine his job was to move the ball without revealing too much of the playbook. His 4th down playcalling didn't do very well, but otherwise I'd say his results were pretty good.

Boise State played tough and were aided by an obvious missed call on the muffed punt that added 7 points to their tally and made the game closer than it should have been. We counted on our guys to come back and show who the better team was, and they did that. I know there will be some dropping in the polls, but it's a W against a traditionally tough opponent who will probably add something to Oregon's strength of schedule argument later. It's a result I can live with.

So far I would say this year's team looks a lot like last year's, maybe with a slight improvement at the skill positions and in the defensive backfield. The trenches on each side of the ball were not as improved as we hoped, but there are several weeks to develop now before the hard games, so let the coaches do their thing and we'll see where we are by the USC game.

I dunno. The OCs on this board are certain Mehringer called a bad game, so not sure what to make of this tweet.

Schwartz is missing some key data..

Oregon 4/15 on 3rd/4th downs
Boise with same amount of first downs as Oregon

Also we’re playing against Boise! They’d be in the middle of the Big Ten.

497/7.9 ypp to 274/4.2 ypp. I think I'll take stats like that against even significantly lesser opponents. Obviously, the stats are not everything. E.g., 10 of BSU's were when they had short fields, when you're generally not as likely to even try big chunk plays.

But obviously not a lot of happiness at being four score home favorites and having to fight from behind. I'll hope that a lot of this was the team unconsciously getting caught up in all the wonderful things people were saying about them, including the #2 ranking.

But it will also be interesting to see how BSU does this year.

I’m less worried about our D. Our offense handed Boise some easy drivers going 0/3 on 4th downs and muffed punt.

And Carl Williams gets probably more credit than Boise on their first touchdown drive.
