But at the same time he has to say those things. Also lines like this are concerning:
“It's not just Koa (Ka’ai). It's not just A’lique (Terry), right? You know, I've done my best to make sure I'm not on social media because I'm sure it's not a lot of positive on there. That's the way it goes, right? Either direction, when it's good or when it's bad. But at least the same coach that I know coached a Joe Moore Award finalist group the last three years, right? So, it's not that all of a sudden this guy can't coach, right? It means we got to coach better. We got to put our guys in really good situations to have success. Drew's a guy that's had a lot of success too. Maybe not as a coordinator, right?”
Just because you had a Joe Moore Award finalist doesn't mean you're a good coach lol. How about all your OL pffs going down every season to a historical low now? Truly some of the worst OL we've seen in decades...

The more I rewatch some film and watch some of the film analysis the experts have posted, the more I’m impressed with Hampton. I know there were some early struggles, particularly against Boise State and Okie State, but also I blame the offense for not moving the ball causing the defense to be on the field way too much allowing more opportunities for busted coverage (the defense was on the field for 80 snaps against Okie State) then against USC Koi and Flowers couldn’t cover anyone. However the UCLA game was an absolute dominate performance by Hampton and the defensive coaching staff, players and coaching. Hampton was in his bag and he was in the head of UCLA’s OC. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a coordinator just dominate his counterpart against a quality opponent like that since Lanning has taken over. I’ve seen dominant performances but that felt like mostly talent, this felt like a combo of talent but also some great scheming and playcalls by Hampton.
Meanwhile the offensive strategy is worse than I initially thought, it’s so elementary honestly. It feels like the offensive coaching staff spent the bye week reading the idiot’s guide to coaching football. Outside of screens/desperation plays it looks like the 5 same passing concepts were repeated all game long.

The post-game interviews are uninspiring.
Lanning does not look good right now.

The play of the defense has changed so much in the last few weeks that I told my son on Saturday I think Lanning has stepped in and gotten more involved in the defensive play calling. Maybe not to the point of taking over, but he seemed to be extremely involved when UCLA had the ball.

I wonder if he feels bad that he has to fire people but also like he let down some of the seniors like Dante, Poncho, Bear, Evan, and Washington that came back. I’ve been hurt so many times by Duck coaches it makes me worried he’s leaving, but I truly don’t think it’s that, I think Dan saw the writing on the wall earlier than we did and sorta knew this was going to happen, that he missed with the offensive coaching staff, and even though they’re people he likes and he wanted to give a chance to, he knows he has to let the go at some point.

Yeah Dan’s attitude and comments during that presser were not encouraging. The program already has a self-scouting problem, and because of their previous success, he seems to think doubling down on their system is how they’re going to climb out of this hole. Not a good sign, IMO.

Dan complimenting Terry doesn’t mean he doesn’t see the issue or is going to keep him long term. I personally feel Terry should’ve been fired Monday, we have the staff to coach the OL without him and then the ducks could make a move for Michalczik, but whether he fires him now or after the season it’s not a big deal. If he’s waiting what good is saying “yeah he’s a bad coach” now? Now if Terry is still the OL coach and Drew is still the OC when Oregon opens the 2027 season against Eastern Washington, then I’ll be extremely critical of Dan and whether he’s the right guy at Oregon or not. As of now, he deserves forgiveness from the fan base this one time for the huge misses with the offensive coaching staff, and no point in assuming he won’t fire anyone until the offseason.

Yeah we'll see! I have some optimism that if things continue at the pace they are now, that someone is gonna get the can. Dan also does play his cards close to his chest, so again we'll see.

We can psycho-analyze him and speculate about what he might be thinking all day long but based on the words he actually said, he sounds like someone who will be extremely reluctant to fire anyone.

Yeah you may be right, and that would be incredibly disappointing, I’m just waiting to see for sure is all.

For sure. I hope I’m wrong and imagine that if things don’t turn around, he may be forced to make changes regardless of how he feels.

I'm not sure what good it does the team to fire people in the middle of the season anyway - especially in a year where he already promoted from within on both sides of the ball. It isn't like top staffers are sitting around waiting for Lanning to call. If personnel need to be changed, isn't it more likely to happen in the offseason? So until then, I wouldn't expect him to say a lot of damning things about any coaches since he still needs them to perform.

Yes, fans are so thirsty for blood that they don't even consider how bad of a spot the team will be in if they just fire a guy like Mehringer right now. The complaint is about his lack of experience, but they would be replacing him with somebody that has even less play calling experience, so how does that exactly help the team right now? Yes, they likely won't make the playoffs either way, but it could be the difference between cratering to a 4-8 season rather than 8-4 or 9-3. At this point, you just let the season play out, and if there isn't significant improvement, you have enough of a sample to make a move in the offseason.

To be clear, I don’t want Mehringer fired. I don’t think he’s an offensive genius by any means but I also don’t think it’s fair to judge him with the OL he’s forced to work with. I don’t know how you coordinate a great offense with a line that is a complete mess most plays.
I do think Terry should be fired ASAP. The state of the OL is inexcusable and Mike Cavanaugh is a proven OL already on the staff as an analyst who could step in as an interim OL coach.

Don't you have to adapt to what you have to some extent though? I believe UCLA's defense was ranked 85th nationally against very weak competition going into our game. I know the OL is in shambles, but then design the offense and play calling to work around some of the weaknesses.
We basically score 0 touchdowns until 2 minutes left in the game. The first touchdown on the 2 yard line was really a defensive touchdown if anything.
We did more with Jeff Lockie, Dakota Prukop, etc... And integration between groups also falls on the OC/Head coach. So yeah scoring no TDs against UCLA for 58 minutes is unacceptable period. Don't care how bad the OL is. Also OL pass blocking was much better than their run blocking!!! We had 34 pass attempts and 'only' 10 of those were hurries. So you can't just blame the OL. Mehringer dropped the ball against UCLA.
