Re: Malcolm Armstead out?
Even with the loss of Armstead -- which I do consider significant -- I see the Ducks taking another step towards respectability as a program next season. Assuming a healthy JJ, having a year where everyone understands what's expected of them coming in, an even higher percentage of Altman-recruited players on the roster, and the incoming talented recruits (all of which are related points, I realize), I just think we'll see Altman continue to propel this team upwards.
IMO, this was in no way a wasted year (unless one has Duke, UCLA, etc., or even somewhat lesser program standards), and, at this point, I will be surely disappointed if we're no better than CBI-bid-worthy come next March.

I'm not saying it's a blessing in disguise, I just don't think it hurts us. It's Malcolm Armstead. He's a mediocre point guard, and offers us almost nothing that Loyd won't be able to provide. We have an abundance of ball handlers to spell him. I just can't get worked up over this. I was irritated with Armstead this year much more than I thought he helped us.
A 'throw away season' is an incredibly stupid phrase to use, for fairly obvious reasons.

Re: Malcolm Armstead out?
Well, looking at next years roster and taking Armstead out does free up the rotations and if he doesn't want to be here than we're better off with him gone. We've got a decent looking SO pg in Loyd and another promising FR pg in Barron; say what you want to about Sim's game but he's a much better mentor for these two young guards than Armstead (especially an Armstead upset over pt). I think next year's team has the ability to be even better than this years team considering that we should improve our outside shooting and if we get this transfer from LaTech, we're going to have some real depth inside even if Jacob doesn't return healthy.
PG - Loyd/Sim/Barron
SG - Williams/Brown/Kingma
SF - Singler/Joseph
PF - Nared/Emory/Kuemper
C - Jacob/Seiferth

This is going to hurt almost as much as losing Catron. Armstead was the only guy left that could break down his defender and create his own shot. Guys like that don't come along all that often, this is going to be hard to overcome.UOducksTK1 wrote:Kinda surprised by the lack of concern about Armstead leaving. I know he wasn't very consistent this year, but he is our best perimeter defender, and he is by far our best passer. And honestly, when he was playing good, he is one of the best PGs in the Pac-10. Unfortunately, we only say him play is great basketball about a quarter of the time.
Pretty random for sure. I think we'll be OK, but it still sucks to lose a potential senior.

Couldn't disagree more. Armstead broke down his defender and 'created his own shot' anywhere from zero to twice a game. It's not exactly like we relied on it as a staple of the offense, like Washington might with Isaiah Thomas or Kentucky with Brandon Knight. Armstead's importance to the team isn't even in Catron's stratosphere.

Agree. When Armstead did create for himself, he usually didn't make it. Armstead is a below average jump shooter. He excels at driving to the basket (and goes left every time).oregontrack wrote:Couldn't disagree more. Armstead broke down his defender and 'created his own shot' anywhere from zero to twice a game. Re: Malcolm Armstead out?
I am very surprised by the reaction on this board. Armstead was one of two guys on the team that could create his own shot. The other being Catron and we just lost both. I agree that Armstead not having a right hand was a handicap, but he was still a decent PAC-10 PG and a very good defender.
We now have a team full of roll players that are PAC-10 caliber bench players at best, maybe with the exception of Brown and Singler. I don't see this team getting any better until the PG situation is addressed. I hope Barron is good.

Re: Malcolm Armstead out?
And Armstead was more than a PAC 12 bench player? Come on now. Armstead leaving stings but it isn't like we're losing an All-League player. If we're a team full of role players now, we were a team full of role players with Armstead.northbeachsf wrote:I am very surprised by the reaction on this board. Re: Malcolm Armstead out?
Armstead playing injured was 3rd in assists & 2nd in steals in the Pac 10 this year.... He had the highest field goal percentage out of the guards on our team..... He created a lot of offense on a below average team. He was far from mediocreoregontrack wrote:I'm not saying it's a blessing in disguise, I just don't think it hurts us. It's Malcolm Armstead. The only real good that I can see was Singler's development.... Loyd got some good experience as well, but I wish he red-shirted.
Everyone else on this year's team graduates next year.... Which will most likely be another sub 500 performance....
rebuilding starts next year.

Re: Malcolm Armstead out?
I think the beauty of the Altman era of Oregon basketball is that it's already been proven that you don't need to be able to create your own shot in order to succeed offensively, which is how we had to get by for so long under Ernie. We run an offense now.northbeachsf wrote:I am very surprised by the reaction on this board. Armstead was one of two guys on the team that could create his own shot. Re: Malcolm Armstead out?
It's hard to get excited for a point guard's assist total when they turn the ball over with the frequency Armstead did. He was a streaky shooter who had a poor assist/to ratio. He was mediocre.Boom wrote:Armstead playing injured was 3rd in assists & 2nd in steals in the Pac 10 this year.... He had the highest field goal percentage out of the guards on our team..... His jump shot is terrible & struggles creating and finish in the lane.
Sure, Loyd has some developing to do. He was a freshman.
How does your mind work? Has every season save 5 or 6 in the last fifty years been a 'throw away' season to you? Please explain why....

Re: Malcolm Armstead out?
There were only 3 guards with a significantly better ratio and 2 of them were on UW... a substantially better team.oregontrack wrote:It's hard to get excited for a point guard's assist total when they turn the ball over with the frequency Armstead did. Armstead was as good or better than 70-80% of the starting PGs in the league.... If you think they're mostly all mediocre... then I accept that... the Pac 10 was pretty bad.... but he was significantly better than anyone else we had.
