I don't think time is the issue. I think there was enough time for him to sell players. He just didn't close.
Lets see what happens with a year to build a bond with recruits. Not sure there is a staff out that could
have done better...

Huh? I remember when Helf had Top 25 studs like Kesian Lucier-South, Juju Smith, Canton Kaumatule, and Josh Sweat visiting and naming us in their top 3. I'm continually amazed the short-end of the stick people give Helfrich while praising everything about Taggart as if he's actually done anything yet. This class is no better than any of Helfrich's classes, and most of the top recruits were already Duck commits at the point of his firing(Lenoir, Redd, Niu, Popo, Rutger, Verdell). I think in general, people are being really dumb. But that's really not a surprise anymore as I get older.

I hear what your saying here, but have to believe we'd have not held onto some of our top prospects/verbal commits with the retention of Helfrich. I also believe we'd have lost many of our veteran players to the draft without the hiring of Taggart and staff. The level of frustration from players was evident and well documented most of the season. I mean even Canton Kaumatule was a follower of the @FireHelfrich Twitter campaign. Getting top tier kids to take officials is not an issue. Our facilities are well known for being one of the best in the nation. Most most would jump at the offer to take a look at what Phil and Nike have built even if they knew ahead of time that they weren't committing to Oregon. I think Helfrich is a good man with an excellent mind for the game of football, but to Oregon's fault they promoted Helfrich to a "level of incompetence". I still wonder how our program would've fared if we'd have brought in an outside head coach on the departure of Kelly and kept the assistants where they were. Most would agree our trajectory was falling faster than my home value in 2008.
I believe our new staff is hungry to prove they can "Do Something" special here, have a better finger on the pulse of recruiting and will absolutely bring some swagger back to our program. In the end its not what we think, but what the recruits think.

My brain hurts after reading this "stupid" post. I mean holy hell. You sir need help if you can't see the difference and the life and energy this new staff has brought with them. Helfrich was over his head and he couldn't make simple football decisions and said at every press conference "that's on me". He also refused to discipline any player who was out of line or not giving their all, and that from the own players mouths caused a lot of them to give up on the team. Helfrich had to go, and Taggart has given me so much hope for the years to come not to mention the dream team staff he has hired to help. Seriously if I didn't know better you are Aaron Fentress himself because you sound exactly like he did all last year. It's Big Willie Style time now and next year after he has a full year to recruit "HIS" guys you will realize how big of a fool you were to post something like this. I agree that a lot of the guys listed in Pontius claim were already committed when Helf was here...and full disclosure I was on the "Give MH one more year" bandwagon. But Pchung15 could not be more right in the DRASTIC difference in energy, culture, approach, and the overall amount of care these coaches have for the recruiting process, what it takes to get top 15 (a def goal) and its results. I would venture to say that if you think the old staff could have hung on to CJ, Deo, T Graham, Redd and others who were being pressured to flip WHILE bringing in other 4 stars...then you are not being honest with yourself or you just don't get it.

I think this comment is absolutely true, as far as it goes. This class wasn't better than a Helfrich class on paper, and Taggart hasn't won any ball games yet. The major difference is enthusiasm and energy, and we will have to see how that translates into an improved team. Taggart seems to have made better hires on defense as well, but maybe Helfrich would have done so as well, if he had been given the chance.Pontius wrote:srsmiley007 wrote:

One thing I give Taggart credit for is a seamless transition. He kept the Helfrich guys on board, and even added a couple of good players. It may not be better than a Helf class, but it is also not worse than a Helf class. That's to Taggart's credit. He was an effective recruiter. How he actually coaches remains to be seen.

We should also consider that Coach T + staff were able to convince some big contributors to stay another season. The program culture was headed in the wrong direction and players would have left had the old staff remained. Looking back, I'm pretty happy with the changes and the timing of the changes.

Helf WAS given the chance and he KEPT Pellum and HIRED Hoke. How'd that D do? And it's not just that the guys Helf DID hire and kept employed did a bad job...it's that they got worse as the year went on. Had they started terrible but showed improvement...that'd be one thing.
