I think if we were to pass on him, it would be likely for Jordan Moko (I'd much prefer Dickerson).

If they opt to take an offensive lineman over a cornerback after taking 9 OL in the last two classes and only one surefire cornerback (Davies), I would be dumbfounded.

Agreed. That would be roster malpractice.

If you need another JuCo OL, with your entire starting OL returning and bringing in four more recruits, then there is something seriously wrong.

The LSU CB coach Corey Raymond had just gotten a raise to $600k, what Heyward was making, in a non income tax state and he had spent all but two years of his college coaching career at LSU - his alma mater. He dates back to Les Miles’ staff, where he was a GA fifteen years ago. He did get passed over for DC just last week, but he also turned down the CB coach position at Texas. I’d be surprised if he’s leaving.

As for Ricks, it doesn’t matter if he’s enrolled. You can drop classes. Henry T is also enrolled. I would be surprised by Ricks.

Yeah, all signs pointed to Ohio State if he did transfer.

Trying to figure out if having no spots is good news or bad news. Here are my options:

1. It means we have three awesome players that will be more beneficial to the team than Dickerson already lined up. That, obviously, would be great news.

2. It means they are holding a spot for a possible transfer down the road who will be more beneficial than Dickerson. Maybe they don't think he is that great and they need more immediate help, so they are betting a more experienced transfer pops up. So whether or not that is good news would be a 'to be determined'.

3. It means they don't actually have three spots left, that we have all been counting scholarships wrong, or missed somebody from last year that they had to add to this years class, etc. Maybe even giving that new kicker a scholarship? This would be bad news.

Any more options?

I think there are only two spots left.

I explained this in another thread, but Logan Sagapolu has to count towards 2021. Someone going on a religious mission can be backdated to the year they signed (2019 for him) or the year enrolled (2020) or two years after starting the mission (2021). Oregon was at 25 for 2019 and 2020 so he has to be counted as 2021.

Unless they got a waiver for Luke Hill or Jordan Happle didn’t come with a scholarship or something else like that there are only two spots.

Giving Henry Kattleman a scholarship doesn’t count against the 25 limit because he’s been enrolled for two years without one. You’re allowed to award scholarships to walk ons who have been on the team 2+ years and they only count to 85 and not the 25 yearly limit.

I think either way we need to take another DB. Unless both JT and Henry T. want to come, then I think you take them. It would suck to hold out for JT and he not come and lose someone like Avante.

One thing I find sad is that we signed two corners and two safeties in this class already, and apparently, that isn't enough. It seems like MC and Co. spend more scholarships on less players than we are used to, and now we are turning away players like Dickerson and Nacua (and possibly Moko). Does everyone think Mario is managing scholarships well? Or is he having a high percentage of misses among all the highly-rated recruits? Why does it feel like we still don't have the depth we need?

The way I look at it is those DB’s we signed this class may or may not contribute at all next year, and bassa may end up playing more of an OLB based on his size. Our safety play was not good this year and with Lenoir gone, it leaves either James or Manning as a starter. James played OK and we have yet to see Manning. So i think it would be good to add at least one experienced DB. But the coaches obviously know better than me, just my outside perspective.

Thanks, that’s what I thought I read and that extra spot is invaluable.

The trouble with the DB recruiting is that when it comes to recruiting cornerbacks, the staff seems to think that you can fit safeties and 'athletes' into the position, rather than looking for guys who show they're great at staying in a receiver's hip pocket.

Class of '20
- Dontae Manning is a fantastic athlete and was a great dual threat QB in high school, but he's new to CB. He would probably get on the field faster as a free safety where he can let his athleticism take over (remember Charles Nelson was our most productive safety with a week of practice), but will take time to be a cornerback.
- Bennett Williams doesn't have the speed to be a corner, so he's a safety and maybe nickel.
- Jared Greenfield could play corner in a pinch, IMO, but safety is definitely his natural position due to both a 'center fielder mentality' and not the greatest top line speed.

Class of '21
- Davies is a natural corner.
- Daymon David is a downhill run-stopping safety. Definitely not a corner.
- Bassa is probably a OLB because of his size/lack of cover ability.
- Barkins has the athleticism for the position, but looks most natural at wide receiver. Whatever position he plays, it will be a while before he sees the field.

Luke Hill is a natural corner, but doesn't help when you're incarcerated.

Losing Hill in that class was big. Hoping Manning progresses and contributes next year.

Did Nacua want to transfer to Oregon? He's a proven good WR and has good height. We should definitely take him, as he'd be a big upgrade to our WR group.
