My first read of this thought you meant that in a QB room with Nix, Mariota, and Herbert, Nix would have won the job by now.

Agree with most of this.

I saw enough of Cristobal to know that he didn't make merit-based decisions in who got playing time. I refuse to believe that not one of our young QBs was more talented than Brown. It's just that Mario was too afraid to risk losing in exchange for better long-term results.

I'm excited for Nix. He should have a much easier time performing well against Pac-12 defenses, and he seems to have a much higher ceiling than AB. If he can simply see the field better, he'll be a huge upgrade. The real question is whether these new coaches will have more guts than Cristobal to play a less-experienced QB who might eventually take us to greater heights.

This is a positive move as long as there's a genuine QB competition. I don't think that really happened under the previous admin.

To be fair, QB development was neither the focus nor core competency of the previous coaching staff. I know some had hopes otherwise with Moorehead, but honestly...give ANY OC the 2016-17 PSU roster and they'll look like a genius. He basically came in, looked at AB and said "read option every down...feel free to call your own number as you see fit".

I just don't see how someone as inconsistent as Nix is a good acquisition.

Crossing fingers that Ty gets an honest chance instead of letting him go elsewhere.

He's a poor mans version of AB only, with two more years of eligibility. AB's stats are actually better than his. He's a game manager at best. He is never going to put the team on his shoulders and go win the game. (See Mariota, VA, Herbert, DT, Masoli, Dixon). Its like we reverted to those quarterbacks from the 2000 teams in the SEC. Not a one of em could actually win games, their entire job was to hand the ball to the next top five draft pick runningbacks, and 'not F everything up".
I was just hoping for a more modern approach, which is why I thought we asked Butterfield and Thompson to come to Oregon but this team is recruiting like crazy but running a horribly outdated Tim Tebow offense that doesn't work in todays football. Even Saban gave it up and now Bama teams light it up on the offense.

Anyway, I think this is just going to become more commonplace in the future, but we aren't quite used to it. If you have uncertainty at any position, you hit the TP. We will have so many questions at QB this off season, but I'm also excited to see who comes out on top with the new coaching staff. Like others have mentioned, how can it be any worse than last year?

He made the game winning pass against Oregon in 2019. I guess one could argue that "we weren't that good anyway", but Nix did it none the less.

I'm curious to what these coaches tell these transfers, especially at QB. I hope it's that they are to come in and compete for the job. It's not going to be handed to them and the best QB will play. Surprisingly, it was Helfrich that pulled Prukop and put in Herbert when he was a freshman. We're left wondering what would happen if they did that will Brown/TT this year.

You have to start the QB who had the best off season, but you can't be afraid to pull him if he isn't producing.

Put AB on those Auburn teams with that bad OL, and he would be lucky to complete 50% or throw for 1500 yards. Nix has never had the benefit of playing behind an OL as good as ours, or playing week in and week out vs D like WSU, Cal, OSU and UW.

I guess from my perspective an upperclassmen QB wouldn’t transfer somewhere UNLESS he had some sort of guarantee he’d likely start, it’s not like Nix is coming to Oregon for the education. It reminds me of 2016 when Herbert won the QB competition and should’ve started but Helf started Prukop because he wanted to stick to his word. If Helf started Herbert from day 1 he might have just saved his job. Nix to me is great as a backup plan but if he’s the guaranteed starter I’m very underwhelmed.

If I didn't have confidence in Lanning I wouldn't like this move but he knows a lot about the SEC and maybe Nix underperformed because of the guy's around him and Lanning knows this. Anthony Brown did way better than I expected him to do since he was much worse at Boston College than Nix was at Auburn. I just hope Ty Thompson can have patience and not be too freaked out by this move. His ceiling is much higher than Nix's so he should stay focused and beat him out like Herbert eventually beat out Prokop.

I went back through and watched some Auburn tape of the past few years

Good:
- Incredible arm strength
- Willing to take deep shots, and often
- Great at zone read
- Good zip on his throws
- His receivers this year were akin to UO in 2017-18, tons of drops on great throws
- Can scramble and make plays

Bad:
- Throws off his back foot way too often. Like way too often
- Tries to force some throws in tight windows
- Sometimes scrambles when he doesn't need to
- He can spin out of a lot of sacks....but when he doesn't get free it's for huge 10-20 yard losses

Overall, he is WAY better than Anthony Brown for sure. If he can get coached up on his footwork, namely stepping into throws instead of jumping back and slinging it, he will be very effective. I think he is very comparable to Bryan Bennett, who went on and had a brief stint in the NFL but is overlooked by Ducks fans since he was here when we had Marcus.
