I'm not sure about that one. Sim wasn't very good when he did play.

The team in general wasn't very good when they played though.duckgrad99 wrote:oregontrack wrote:Ernie stopped playing him.buckmarkduck wrote:Remember when Sim had a 30 point game and looked like a future stud his first half of his FR year? Haha unfortunately true. However, Sim has definitely been one of the more unimpressive ducks on the team. He was looking so good early his freshman year.Duck07 wrote:The team in general wasn't very good when they played though.duckgrad99 wrote:oregontrack wrote:Ernie stopped playing him.buckmarkduck wrote:Remember when Sim had a 30 point game and looked like a future stud his first half of his FR year? And that's my point. When he was getting minutes as a freshman, he looked pretty good. Did he hit the freshman wall? Yeah, the whole team did. But he definitely showed flashes. Last year he came off the bench and was yanked after a miss. His field goal attempts were cut in half and his minutes were slashed. You try finding any sort of a rhythm with that nonsense. Hard to play when you know anything less than perfection is going to get you back on the bench...
IMO, nobody has seen him play enough to know that he's 'awful.' Judging him based on last year is criminal.

It's not even about the stats or getting into a rhythm. It's his demeanor that shows me he isn't ready for this level of play. He seems extremely timid and unaggressive. He misses easy layups and doesn't look like he knows what he's doing more than half the time. Matthew Humphrey on the other hand, while his stats and minutes weren't so hot, played his butt off and was a very aggressive player. Clutch too! I'm sorry but the difference between two players like that is very noticeable to me. And, in my opinion, the lack of minutes or lack of getting into a rythm is a poor excuse fir Garrett.oregontrack wrote:And that's my point. You cannot blame everything on Kent or the team being bad as a whole. Sim got 24 minutes a game as a freshman and shot 35% from the field with only 2 assists per game. He disappeared when conference play started. I'm not saying he cannot improve(especially under Altman), but he has to start hitting open shots. I also think that maybe he has lacked the confidence to play in the pac-10, so hopefully that changes this season.

Well, Sim is a shooter; it's really not about stats, I agree, but rhythm has quite a bit to do with it. He's not really a slasher, or an aggressive offense player looking to take his man on the dribble. He's a specialization player, and like any pure shooter, he needs minutes and shots. It's not that Sim doesn't play his butt off; I think that's an odd accusation to make. You don't think he plays hard? The comparison is a bit rough, but recall James Davis: now imagine James Davis if Kent pulled him every time he missed a shot. James didn't play defense or attack the lanes, he was a shooter. Kent gave him minutes and shots to develop his rhythm, and it doesn't hurt that Davis played on good teams, where Kent could afford misses. Had Kent pulled Davis everytime he missed a shot, everyone would think he was useless, too.UOducksTK1 wrote:It's not even about the stats or getting into a rhythm. Yes, and I alluded to this twice earlier, when I said I wanted to see his stats during Oregon's OOC games his freshman year. EVERYBODY hit the rookie wall that season and looked terrible in Pac-10 play; everyone's numbers took a big hit. I'd like to see Sim's numbers for the first half of that season, though, too see what he did when given a starting role before the season went to hell.duckgrad99 wrote:You cannot blame everything on Kent or the team being bad as a whole. I agree, he needs to hit open shots. You're absolutely right. But the kid is a shooter, and shooter's need shots. He wasn't allowed them last year. I think he lacks confidence because his old coach killed it. He's also not a PG, I don't think, so I couldn't care less about his assist numbers.

I think the biggest problem with Sims is that he's a tweener.
He doesn't have the handle/quickness to play PG and he doesn't have the size/athleticism to play SG in the Pac10.
Sims has average athleticism and is listed at 6-1...... the average Pac 10 SG is an explosive 6-5. He doesn't stand a chance.

All I am going to say is watch out for some of these players that we have written off once DA gets to caoch them up a little bit. Remember, most of these players are "kids" that don't know it most of the time, but need a coach to show them how to get better. I Liked Ernie as a person (yes I had met him and sopken to him nultiple times over the years) but that was not his cup of tea. I personally think people will be amazed with Garret this year.

I would agree, but you can't coach size & athleticism.Autzenoise wrote:All I am going to say is watch out for some of these players that we have written off once DA gets to caoch them up a little bit. Sim is an incredible athlete. I would disagree with you vehemently on that one. However, you're right that he lacks ideal size for a SG, and you're also right that he's a tweener.

But in college BB, you can get away with playing a player like Sim at SG against a lot of teams since they don't always have the prototypical SG either.oregontrack wrote:Sim is an incredible athlete. But he never shows it. That's my entire point, his demeanor on the basketball court resembles a player with a lack of intensity and direction on the court. Have we ever seen him use that athletic ability? I never have..oregontrack wrote:Sim is an incredible athlete. I would disagree with you vehemently on that one. It's almost like he just needs some motivation, because surely the shooting and athleticism is there. I just don't see anything changing since he's already a JR. But hey bump this thread halfway through the season and let's see who is right. I want Sim to do great, but I just don't see it happening.
