The CBA ends after the Super Bowl. The draft will go on, but I doubt very much that DaQuan Bowers (or Luck had he gone) will be getting that kind of money any more since owners can wait until the new cba is signed before they sign rookie deals since they will have that players rights for a year as it is. Luck comes from a family with money, his dad Oliver was an nfl qb. There is more to life to some people than money and being drafted #1 means you go to a garbage franchise with limited chances of success. Carolina has 2 stud rbs, no real wrs or tes, no real line and needs to revamp their defense.
But we're talking a lot of money here. First it's 1 less year of total pay over his life, which is probably in the $8-$12 million dollar range. Then it's also the difference between what he could get now versus what the rookie salary cap might be. That could be another 3-4-5-6 million per year for 4 or 5 year contract. And that's assuming he stays as the #1 pick next year or doesn't get injured.

Certainly, but this is a kid who doesn't seem motivated by money because he's grown up with it. Secondly, as I said before, going #1 means you are going to a terrible team. With the uncertainty of the CBA players will almost certainly have less time in camp to get ready. Certainly Joey is able to live off his rookie contract, but the CBA is going to pushed towards paying players who produce on the pro field which means its not so much his first contract, but his second and third contracts that will make him the majority of his money if you want to project his entire career. He could take the money and flame out like JaMarcus, or he could come in next year a little more prepared and with the guarantee that he will get a full training camp in.

Honestly I respect his decision much like I respect LaMichael's decision to stay. Now obviously LaMichael's situation is different as he would likely be a middle round pick as opposed to Luck who would be the #1 pick, but as far as the general principle is concerned both have little to gain as they wouldn't move much higher from where they would be projected now. Also, we mock the whole student-athlete tag as quite a few of these kids hardly go to class and only really take football seriously. Both Luck and LaMichael seem to be more of the exception here rather than the norm. As for Luck, he's about to finish his degree at one of the best colleges in the land and he'll still likely go at #1 in the 2012 draft. Not a very common thing these days to stick around and get your degree. Yeah I guess it's a risk with injury and what not and Stanford does lose some key guys but even so, as I said before (and few will argue against), he'll still likely be #1 even if he were to get hurt or drop off a little bit in production, that is unless he totally flames out which I consider to be HIGHLY unlikely. Worked out pretty well for Peyton Manning and has worked out pretty well for Bradford too thus far, and that's with both going to teams who were straight awful when they each arrived too.

1. LaMike would've been a late first-mid second round pick if we would come out after this year.
2. Luck is guaranteed to go #1 after his senior year much like Leinart and Locker were.
Honestly, this decision makes 0 sense. He's losing most of his O-line, his HC, and he was going to be the #1 overall pick. It's not like Carolina was a horrible situation either.

It may be that he just has different priorities than you do....Not exactly like the kid can be called an idiot...I know I couldnt have made it into Stanford....And, hate to tell ya...money ISNT everything....I am sure that no matter what he does and when he does it, he will be quite successful....

Yeah I'm not sure what Luck is thinking. I highly doubt he'll have a better season than he did this year. I'm pretty confident Stanford won't play in a BCS game next year. Why put yourself at risk of an injury as well? hmm, wish he'd go because now that game @ Stanford will be very difficult.

He wants to finish his degree, enjoys playing in college, enjoys being in college, and doesn't have any compelling financial reason to ensure he is taken with the first pick in the 2011 draft. It may be hard to appreciate because most of us here aren't as wealthy as Luck's family is, but given his fortunate monetary situation, this isn't really a decision worthy of criticism.

I could be wrong, but unless they extend the current cba...... the rookie salary cap would go into effect this year and not next.....

That's a valid reason. But still, you'd think just the thrill of playing in the NFL + the risk of getting hurt at the college level would be enough to enter the draft this year.
Not to mention, what if Harbaugh leaves? That'd leave Luck in a more interesting position.

He derives enjoyment (thrill) out of playing at the college level too - I don't think he judges the NFL as being any more fun to play in that college football, and if anything, is less. That seems to be a fair and accurate appraisal on his part, given the NFL is more of a business and thus has less emotion, less camaraderie, and less playing for the sake of playing that college does. And since the risk of career ending injury exists at both the pro and college levels, he should only view the "cost" of his decision to use another year of college eligibility in terms of the loss of potential future earnings; given his family's wealth, he doesn't (nor shouldn't) value the money as much as someone from a poorer background. Basically, you can't say that a long-term injury suffered in the 2011 college season wouldn't have happened in the 2011 NFL season - such is the nature of freak accidents of the sort leading to career ending injuries - and so he shouldn't view the possibility of one occurring in the 2011 college season as denying him future playing opportunities that would have existed had he jumped to the NFL. Since he cares less about money, and that is the only thing an injury in 2011 denies him, he makes sense maximizing his current utility by returning to Stanford.

People compalin constantly about pro athletes' lack of loyalty and the fact that a large percentage of them are looking out for only themselves. They'll take the biggest contract over the best chance to win, plat selfishly, etc. Now Andrew Luck passes on millions of dollars to get his degree, spend another year with his teammates, and make another run at a Pac-10 or National Championship and youcall it a horrible decision? I think you priorities may be a little out of whack.
This may not be the smartest decision financially, but his family is already well off so money doesn't have to be the deciding factor.
Just my two cents.

I agree with you. With either choice, he probably would have been criticized on here. I think he made the best decision for him since he loves where he's at, his family isn't hurting for money, and he wants to get his degree.

Also, this talk about Luck getting injured and this somehow effecting his position in either draft is a little absurd in light of Sam Bradford. Luck is the best qb in either class and top players often take out insurance policies when they do return to assure themselves of at least some cash should he suffer something debilitating.

Totally agree too... Alabamaduck said it best...
Another thing that I keep seeing brought up is a possible career ending injury, with the medical/rehab treatment available today this doesnt really seem to be the big deal its made out to be. When was the last time a college player of Luck's caliber get hurt in a game and NEVER play again?!? You just dont see that many career ending injuries these days to any players... Walt blew up his knee in what the 4th game of the 2009 season and was playing the next year? Maybe Im wrong....

I guess I didn't get my point across to a few on here and I guess we can agree to disagree BUT let add this isn't take the money and run money is not the most important thing and certainly not in my life. Hell I taken a few years off to raise my kids because I'm able to start over easier than most because I'm able to make great money and that was a very difficult at first but the VALUE of my life and my kids is better.
So to go back to Andrew Luck, the VALUE of continuing his education now verses later to me is the odd choice here...he wants his degree great I'm all for that so finish it when your career is over with NO distractions you never turn down guaranteed money for a future that can only be equal to worst given the Stanford situation. The money we are discussing above could be anywhere discussed above but certainly next year its not going to be better! And if its Carolina he's trying to avoid please he's gong to a bad team no matter what happens. He is the best prospect on the board and I find it strange that he is waiting because it doesn't make a lot of sense to the majority of experts and fans. And stop saying his dad has money because while that may be true Andrew does not!
Again I want to point out the degree he's after what is it worth over the next 4-5 years (if he's a flop in the NFL) that its worth turning down guaranteed money now? Also I want to point out and in that 4-5 years he can still earn that degree.
I hope for him that he is lucky and it all works out for him but many would agree that the odds are against him.
