++++1 for what everyone said. No idea where you got the sentiment Helfrich never got the chance to hire guys on defense. Huh? I remember when Helf had Top 25 studs like Kesian Lucier-South, Juju Smith, Canton Kaumatule, and Josh Sweat visiting and naming us in their top 3. I'm continually amazed the short-end of the stick people give Helfrich while praising everything about Taggart as if he's actually done anything yet. This class is no better than any of Helfrich's classes, and most of the top recruits were already Duck commits at the point of his firing(Lenoir, Redd, Niu, Popo, Rutger, Verdell). I think in general, people are being really dumb. But that's really not a surprise anymore as I get older.
One thing I give Taggart credit for is a seamless transition. He kept the Helfrich guys on board, and even added a couple of good players. It may not be better than a Helf class, but it is also not worse than a Helf class. That's to Taggart's credit. He was an effective recruiter. How he actually coaches remains to be seen.
Helf WAS given the chance and he KEPT Pellum and HIRED Hoke. How'd that D do? And it's not just that the guys Helf DID hire and kept employed did a bad job...it's that they got worse as the year went on. Had they started terrible but showed improvement...that'd be one thing. Or if they'd started terrible but you could SEE the players bustin' their ass each game...that'd be one thing. But neither were true....except for Dye and Schooler.

Right. That's why I said that Taggart seems to have made better hires. By 'given the chance' I meant if Helfrich had been kept another year (which is what we are comparing Taggart's performance to), Helfrich might have hired a better staff, especially if he had the same money to go out and get them that Taggart was given. Just trying to be fair in the comparison.OregonDuckPike wrote:"Taggart seems to have made better hires on defense as well, but maybe Helfrich would have done so as well, if he had been given the chance. 4-8 coaches who had two chances to make hires aren't given more money to go out and try again. If Helf didn't push for the kind of coaches he wanted, that's on him too. He knew his job and all his coaches jobs were on the line. He could have sent the entire defensive staff packing after Pellum and asked for money to hire lots of great people. He didn't. He had chances. He didn't make the most of them.

Major difference; Chip handed Helf the baton with a 1/2 lap lead, which vanished and then he proceeded to drop the baton - Tag had to pick it up while the field blew by him. Just to catch the likes of UW and UCLA was an unreal effort by coach T.Pontius wrote:srsmiley007 wrote:Yep. However, in years past, those guys wouldn't even trip. All I know is Helfrich chose Pellum for DC, and knowing what we know now, Pellum didn't have any qualifications for the job.Phalanx wrote:Right. Then, Helfrich chose to keep Pellum for a second year after he was revealed as a fraud.
After helfrich had his hand forced, he hired Brady home, who's never been a DC and is the only Power 5 DC in the history of CFB that could give Pellum a run for "The Most Incompetent DC of All Time" award.
A HC with that track record isn't going to magically turn things around with genius hires.
He was an awful HC on just about every level.

One poster was saying helfrich would be doing just as well and made similar hires.duckfan96 wrote:Back on topic ? Anyone else they gonna get? Start another topic to bash helfrich if y'all want to.
Agreed it's sort of off topic but to characterize the off topic portion as "Helf bashing" is loaded and obtuse.

Maybe so but if y'all wanna bash the man (which a lot of you did non stop) other guys would be a good forum for that. Not hijacking a thread about possible future Ducks.

I agree with the sentiment that people are overly bashing Helfrich and revising history to try to make him look worse than he was. He holds the Oregon record for most wins in a season, and the victory over Florida State was the biggest single win in Oregon football history. His coaching record is 37-16, and that doesn't include his stellar years as the OC.
I think Taggart brings momentum and energy, and that is what a school like Oregon needs to succeed. Helfrich had clearly lost his momentum and appeared to be out of answers. I don't think the recruits are better than under Helfrich yet, but I do have hope that the coaching, particularly on defense, will be much better. It can hardly be worse. I don't think there was anything wrong with Helfrich's offense, other than that he hadn't recruited a good quarterback in several years, and had to start a true freshman last year. Hopefully, the QB situation is on the rise, and Taggart runs an offense as effective as Helfrich's.
Anyway, the actual topic of this thread is petered out; the recruiting class appears to be set.

Okay here's an attempt to get back on topic..... I was hoping somehow Kaymen Cureton would pass our academic standards but it appears he took another route. Looks as if he signed with Nevada. I know we have a quarterback in this cycle, but Kaymen's athleticism can't be ignored. I look forward to keeping tabs on this guy and his "hand cannon" of an arm.
I've looked at pretty much all other names/prospects mentioned in previous threads and can't seem to find anyone who hasn't already signed with someone. To give the former coaching staff credit, they did do I good job digging through the weeds to find potential talent in unlikely places. Hopefully Taggart can network with Oregon and Florida high school coaches to emulate what Helfrich and company did.
Can't help but to root for the underdog/duck.

I disagree. I didn't like Cureton at all. Didn't think he was that great of an athlete either. He would have ended up being a slightly more athletic Damion Hobbs.TyranT wrote:Okay here's an attempt to get back on topic..... Helfrich had no desire to hire a better staff. In fact, he said he asked Chip to consider coming back to Oregon to save their jobs. For the millionth time, Helfrich had no business being a P5 HC. He was lost from day one and it was only because of a set of circumstances that had nothing to do with him that he was able to last as long as he did.Phalanx wrote:Right. This ++1. He's in a single read offense, his arm strength isn't all that great, slightly long deliver and I'd bet money that he's not more than 6'ft. Seriously doubt he's 6'2. He's OK, and could progress but he wouldn't beat out any of our 3 right now and not a P5 QB.Phenom wrote:I disagree. I didn't like Cureton at all. Didn't think he was that great of an athlete either. So for all of the talk about Oregon or USC for Lang...it looks like he signed with Colorado.

Wonder what happened there. He must not have wanted Oregon very much. I can't imagine our coaches didn't give him a shout once rumors about him not getting in with USC started floating.pdxduck2013 wrote:So for all of the talk about Oregon or USC for Lang...it looks like he signed with Colorado.
