The MLB amateur draft is pretty crazy. Kids aren't drafted on talent but on the ability of a team to sign him. Because MLB doesn't use a slotting system (i.e. the first player picked gets the most money, 2nd player gets the second most etc....) like the NFL a player picked in the teens or 20's can still get paid, especially if you are picked by someone like the Tigers, Yankees or Redsox.

Like I said I hope his agent sucks, that's part of the equation.
No really, I hope the best for this kid, seems like he has a bright future ahead of him, and can't really go wrong either way.

He's a Duck, but may never play a down of football for us if he gets drafted by MLB, which is my understanding of this conversation.

I wonder if he's told any of the Oregon coaches whether he intends to play football here? You never know. Many kids are attracted to the money, but there are always some who place a higher value on getting a quality education first. Maybe Lane is one of those special kids.

Perhaps there is hope. Then again, this is only one source, and I am not sure how credible it is. The MLB draft is pretty difficult to gather information for, especially from prognosticators. Unlike the NFL or NBA draft, which you can find hundreds of mock drafts and prospect rankings and profiles for, the MLB draft seems to be covered and followed much less. I guess we will have to just wait until June.

I second Mops as far as this Braxton Lane thing goes: Low risk, high reward. Good stuff. Let's just land Jackson and Gaines now...

some of you can call me crazy here, but his name just screams greatness to me. It doesn't make sense to me either but I think this kid is going to be an oregon stud!

If he does decide to attend school, luckily college baseball has the same rules as football in that a player must be three years out of high school before he can enter the draft again. I do know 1st round picks in the MLB draft get at least a million dollars and fifth round picks get somewhere in the 100,000 dollars range. The lower he goes, the better chance of him coming to Oregon and trying to go higher in the draft as a Junior.

I am staying away from calling this a leverage move and instead a move to give him more options as an athlete.

If he didn't care about Oregon and wanting to be at Oregon he would have simply found a school close to home and sign plan on signing with them come Wednesday. The fact that he's willing to come across the nation speaks volumes on his interest at Oregon and football.

I've been scouring the internet for information on him because I think he's one of the biggest recruits of the '09 class, and I've found some basic information on him.

1. He's from Georgia and has been mentioned numerous times as tied for the best WR in all of Georgia with one other athlete.
2. He's listed in the Top 100 FB recruits in the nation for '09 according to one site.
3. He's a baseball All-American
4. He didn't play his senior year of football so he could concentrate on baseball, hence the 2* rating. He's got a 4* offer list.
5. He's got a family background of professional and college sports.
6. He's part of a young leadership consortium where he mentors young adults (I forget the name), seems like a very high character guy with a great GPA and clearly has exceptional classroom skills.
7. Did I mention that he runs a 4.29 40? 6' 180ish pounds.

Exceptional pickup. I realize that this is a selfish statement, but I hope we see him in Duck football AND baseball uniforms rather than him going pro.

I agree. We need WRs and I think one like this is worth the risk that he might never suit up. I hope he does, though. I'm pretty sure he was a 4* before the season.

I don't think this has been mentioned but this kid is the son of Carl Lane, former beevur RB.

Nice work destroyer, lets hope like hell he's not satisfied with if draft rank and becomes a DUCK in both sports. I remember reading about him last summer and being a guy I had hoped the coaches stayed on...good stuff now lets just get him on the field!!
