With the limit of 25 new players, there was a discussion* and a decision made somewhere. Curious what they're not taking now.
I may be behind, but didn't the decommitment of that running back open up a spot? Last year, the ducks lost a WR to USC late in the process, and picked up Cardwell instead, a second running back. Maybe they figure they are covered at that spot and are looking at another DE instead?

Maybe it all means Verdell is coming back. I'm more curious how they are going to square taking all these players with scholarship limits.

They have said in interviews that Mastro asked for a second running back last year (Cardwell) and in exchange agreed not to recruit one this year.

The DEs are for depth. Moss is still in play and they want another for depth purposes.

It seems like the top of the board is:

Cyrus Moss (Edge)
DE
Zeke Berry (Safety)

Outside of those, I think the last spot is for whatever "can't miss" player the staff can land. Cristobal has always tried to keep a spot or two open for luxury commits that are predicated on the player just being too good to tell no.

I think there are more, but will take the ducks to move away (previously discussed).

But I agree with those two.

I know nothing about recruiting and scholarship limits, just enjoy seeing a threat titled changed to add the “QUACK” to it. But regarding who is left, how is the team looking for the future with the nose tackle position? It seems like since 2019 we haven’t had a quality NT, it was Jordan Scott but he regressed last year. I was really hoping for Ika but still bummed that the coaches missed out on him twice. Are there any current players or recruits that could become a quality nose tackle for this team?

They have Sir Mells, who is massive and needs to actually slim down in college (listed at 6'4, 310 but probably heavier). He has all the athletic ability, but rumblings are that he's incredibly lazy. I've watched some of his high school tape and it seems to confirm that. Dave Iuli has been recruited by Mirabal as an offensive player, but if you watch his tape, it's hard to imagine him not ending up a DT. He's all of 6'5, 315, so I'm crossing my fingers he does come to the dark side.

Thanks for the info! That’s crazy Mario would take Sir Mells if he’s so lazy (my phone keeps autocorrecting mells to smells, could become an adequate nickname), that just doesn’t seem like an acceptable trait to Mario. Weird he would take someone lazy like Mells but wouldn’t take a chance on Darnell Washington who would be a huge asset to Oregon right now.

Hopefully Iuli takes your advice and comes to Oregon as a DT, we have enough young talent on the OL and could definitely use a NT. It seems from my perspective the defense has been missing the presence of Scott playing well since 2019.

Is NT a position of need for Oregon going forward?

Oregon is still heavily pursuing DL Anthony Lucas out of AZ, who was just bumped up to a 5* in 247's composite rankings.

Oregon, and many schools, take the strategy of casting a wide net. Oregon isn't the only school that offered Mells. He was previously committed to washington and holds a Michigan offer, amongst others. More often than not, guys gets an offer without ever meeting a coach. Offers come on the first phone call ever with a coach (Juco DB said his first conversation with Marcel Yates ever was when Yates offered), or even through a twitter instant message. We aren't doing Chip/Helfrich background checks nowadays.

They're still pursuing Anthony Lucas and probably others at DT, but they don't seem to lead for any, as far as I'm aware.

This seems to back up the rumors that a poster here mentioned earlier (IIRC). I believe their child played with or against Sir Mells and stated the same things. With spots being so limited, you gotta trust the coaches but you never want to hear about a poor work ethic. Hopefully, it's all just fiction.

Yea, his comment is what prompted me to look into it. Mells hasn't been posting any senior tape, so I've had to look up hudl highlights for teammates and opponents to see what Mells looks like. What I found is that he takes a lot of plays off. A lot.

One thing for sure if he comes in and takes plays off and is lazy he wont see
the field not under Mario

Justin is a great dude, and monstrously athletic. Ran a 4.50 40 at 250 pounds with a 37 inch vertical and 25 reps on the bench press. Top 3% and top 13% of combine results for his size since they’ve had data.

The recruiting services didn’t have him as a throwaway recruit, but definitely underrated. It also took a lot of work from him and him finding a good position, which it turned out was how the Rams are (before injury) using him.

Since they can now take 32 instead of 25 that makes it more interesting. Doubtful that they could make it work, but we all know things change closer to signing day on both sides.

Top prospects still on the board by their 247 composite rank and home state:
11. LB Harold Perkins, Texas
19. OT Josh Connerly, Washington
33. WR Kevin Coleman, Missouri
52. Edge Cyrus Moss, Nevada
60. DL Anthony Lucas, Arizona
65. Edge David Bailey, California
87. Edge Nyjalik Kelly, Florida

I’m sure there are other ones I’m missing like Zeke Berry, but those are the top-100 dream finish type of recruits.

The USC coaching search is gonna be interesting, there will be ripples.

They're going to have a hard time taking 25 with how few SRs they have so 32 is going to be out of the question unless they have like 15-20 players transfer out and/or enter the NFL draft.
