What do you all think about Ivan McCartney being one of those surprises? I think he would be a great pick up.

I don't think so. While Hill is nice, he doesn't make up for the loss of Grant IMO.

Recruiting cracks me up. none of these guys have ever played a down of
college ball. i hold little stock in the star system. remember cam colvin the
answer to all our receiving problems? theres been others. some dont pan out
and some are the real deal, like LMJ and j stew. and others of course. i wont
judge a recruit until he's been on the field. you cant judge a class usually until their seniors. look at the hype over gaines and d jackson. they redshirted. im sure they are awsome players but they didnt make the huge impact this year that they were hyped to do. dont get me wrong, i love the
recruiting process and reading up on the players and wishing and hoping.
but so much goes into the process and some do change their minds. i wish
nothing but the best for grant. but im glad hill chose us. look at our running
backs. if someone comes in and displaces lmj as starter can you imagine how
good that back has to be? Ive seen all the good ones from bobby moore and on and lmj is right there with them all. maybe better. im not worried about
running back. bring in the dt's first.

Colvin gets a bad wrap. He was no doubt the most talented WR his entire time ar Oregon. Injuries really hurt him and so did being in Belotti's dog house. I still find it funny that Jordan Kent started over him Colvin's Jr year

I liked colvin.. saw the talent. yes injuries played a part. i was pointing out
more that things dont always work out. i want to see the players on the
field before i get all excited or disappointed.

You hit it on the head. I've run statistics on Recruits and whether or not they go to the NFL based on their Star Rating. I found that there is absolutely NO CORRELATION between Star Ratings 2-4 and which group sends more players PRO. However, 5 Star recruits did have a strong correlation between in terms of a higher percentage going PRO more than any other Group.

So, your point is right on, all of these 3 Stars we are getting could become superstars or busts. The reason why Oregon and OSU have done so well, is that their coaching staffs can and have evaluated all the talent under the radar and recruit players that fit best into their systems and chemistry.

I remember Malachi Lewis coming out of HS as a 4 star rated RB, and he's never panned out as a TE, his speed was overrated and his strength isn't great enough to block. But, this Paulson kid is the best pass catcher on the team, what was he rated? That's right, a 3 Star. Tukuafu was a 3 Star, he'll go Pro. Eddie Pleasant was a 3 Star, he's a starter as a Sophmore, Terrance Pritchett was a 4 Star LB and flunked out. There are too many examples to cite.

Point is, Recruiting is a lot of Hype, don't get too excited or disappointed one way or the other. That being said, I'm sorry we lost out on E.Grant, but realistically I understand his decision, where's his playing time over the next three years behind LMJ, D.Williams, Barner, and anyone else we may land? Just like losing out on C.Harper hurt, but J.Maehl stepped up and he was a 3-Star DB!!

LMJ was a 3 Star on Scout and a 4 Star on Rivals, Masoli was a 2 STAR!!! And both of those guys will be the major play-makers for the Ducks in a BCS Bowl and will most likely be mentioned for the Heisman list next year! Lol....

Masoli was a 2 STAR!!!
well if you've done all this recruiting analysis you'd know that Masoli was only a 2 star INITIALLY because no one had graded him out (but to those who do rank JC kids, Masoli was the best jc qb in the country or at least top 3 which pretty much means he was a 4 star kid out of SFCC) and that kids who get at least ONE scholie from a d-1 school get automatic 2 star ratings. honest. the lowest you can be is really a 2 star. a one star kid is someone who hasn't been rated, no video of him has been seen and maybe 100 (frends, family, classmates, etc)people on the face of the planet knew he even existed.

shoot, if you look at both rivals and scout this second, he only gets one star from scout and ZERO stars on rivals.

Personally, I just get excited for recruiting during the long, cold nights between seasons (or between the Civil War and bowl games).

Although I know stars don't mean a whole lot, it just gives me one more thing to be happy or disappointed over. I'm not about to jump off a bridge. But I will be happy or sad about certain players. Until the season starts again.

That's why I try to not get too wrapped up into any single player in a recruiting class- with the exceptions being the 5 stars. But I do follow the overall rating of the class. Ethan Grant may or may not be a big loss to us- we won't know for some time, or maybe never. Dontae Williams may or may not be a big get, but stocking up on players rated like he is increases our odds.
