this board use to be filled with so much more positive thinking. Lately I've grown tired of people calling each other out...... saying our coaches have no clue what they are doing........... we should only recruit in California...........name calling............
back in the good old days people would disagree, but amazingly enough no name calling took place and everyone just got along.

It sucks that we missed on Boyd, but it's not the end of the world and by no means does it tell me that we shouldn't recruit nationally. This is only the second year that we've gone after kids back east, and while the results haven't been great, the results are coming.

I've lived here in the south for over a decade now, and when I first moved here no one knew if UofO was the Ducks or the Beavers. Now whenever I wear my Duck gear people want to talk about Dixon, the facilities, the uniforms, Nike, when we're going to knock SC out of the cat-bird's seat in the conference, etc. What this tells me is that we are a program on the rise, both in the media and in the minds of HS kids. Our time is coming, so sit back and enjoy the ride!

At this time, Oregon can only reasonably go as far as TX and get recruits with any certainty. Anything east of TX is kind of a crap shoot right now. The recruits that we have gotten past TX (Scott, Roper, Embry, Blont, and Alston) are anomalies in Oregon's recruiting. They were willing to venture this far west to play football, but I would be willing to say that 90% of recruits don't have the willingness to go play anywhere in the country.

Football recruits are so much different than basketball recruits since FB recruits don't tend to travel outside of their state while BB recruits will go all over to play AAU ball. There just isn't that much of a circuit for FB recruits to travel and get used to being away from their homestate. With all that said, I don't think that Oregon should stop recruiting back east, but I think they need to be more selective in picking which ones to recruit. They need to ask a recruit up front if they are willing to travel. If they aren't, I say move on to others that are willing to.

The fallacy of your logic is that until recently we could not get players from Texas. Thus, we should not have been recruiting players from Texas, so we should not have gone after DT, LaMichael James or Cantu. People need to get a grip on small thinking.

Oh and personally, I know nothing about recruiting, save what I read here.... so as far as how Chip Kelly does with "closing" I don't know.... I'm sure it's not the easiest thing in the world to sell.... Eugene certainly appeals to me, but hey, my parents were hippies. Go figure.

I think last year proved though that TX us about as far as Oregon can go. They've tried in past years to get people from back east, but came up mostly empty. Last year, TX was a good state for Oregon. To me, TX is where Oregon should put a focus before heading any further east for recruits. FL next year is yielding good rewards so far, but I still think TX should be another focal point. There are enough kids in TX that pulling 2-3 kids a year wouldn't matter to schools down there. I think the same could be for FL, but that is going to be several years and BCS games down the road.

Don't the coaches need to have some sort of connections though? Now with a couple more texas kids on board i think it will be easier... same thing with kansas (especially if we land gaines or brown) and maybe with florida too after next year.

FL is going to be a tough nut to crack though. Distance is the main thing working against Oregon. Plus, Florida gets anybody they want down there and Miami is locking down all of the talent in the Miami area. The things that may help us down the road are more 10-win seasons, FSU losing scholarships due to NCAA violations, and the ability to close the deal on the 2010 recruits. I say that getting 1-2 a year from FL would be a serious coup for Oregon. I still think that eying TX would be a better since the distance factor isn't as great and they wouldn't miss 2-3 a year there either since the population base in TX is so great (and its still growing.)

Couldn't agree more! I come on "The War Room" to read about & discuss recruiting. Not read some 40 year old baby whine about how our coaches suck at recruiting & don't know what they're doing.

It's funny you say things like this. What if I turned it around and said "I come to this board to read intelligent football discussion. Not read some 15 year old who gets his facts wrong, asks dumb questions, and makes silly, baseless predictions."

So you agree with me? I agree with that too. I was on this board pretty early on & it was full of intelligent people who made smart posts. Who, when they had a dissagreement or argument, actually backed it up with facts instead of making blanket statements & stating their opinion like it's the Ten Comandments.
