I wonder if they hire Turgeon just so they can keep Payne for his recruiting connections. The OL story made it sound like him and Turgeon are good enough friends that he would hire him to help him out on the West Coast for recruiting. Keeping Payne may help in the continued recruitment of Jones and Ross from Jefferson, although I think they head out-of-state.

jones is favoring kentucky, and payne may leave to join calipari as well (they're also real good friends). the open position on uk's staff would be rod strickland leaving to join tony barbee on the depaul staff.

but turgeon is a good hire imo, and as you mentioned, it could help in jones's recruitment or payne staying on board. but even if it doesn't, i like what turgeon brings from a coaching and recruiting standpoint. i'd still prefer dixon but turgeon is #2 on my list and i'd love it if we got either of them

Right now, I would say Dixon and Turgeon are either or choices for me since they would equally do well at Oregon. Turgeon is probably my #1 pick by a hair only because of his closer ties to Oregon than Dixon.

ESPN's rumour central says that Dixon is tied to the opening and interested in the Oregon job.

Short term Turgeon might be the best hire, with his connections to Payne and for Texas recruiting and his previous years here. But when does Self retire, or bolt for the NBA. Assuming Turgeon is successful would we lose him to Kansas eventually. Dixon might be just as big of splash nationally, but will there be an adjustment a little to him being back on the west coast and developing connections in recruiting etc. Obviously he will add some east coast recruiting for us, though. Long term we won't lose him to TCU, potentially to UCLA, his home town, but then any great coach here will be sought out eventually.

I don't think Self ever bolts for the NBA since he has such a sure thing at Kansas. Who would ever give up a job where you are almost guaranteed to get the top players every year and make the NCAA Tournament? The one person that did was Roy Williams, but he picked his alma mater in North Carolina, which is just like Kansas, if not better.

Whomever it is MUST establish the Portland area as "Oregon's own." Enough of this crap where our best go off to Kansas!

Tubby Smith but he more than just a token minority. I really wouldn't mind him as a coach.

i think we agree for the most part on who we should get. i also feel like tubby would a good hire. not as good as dixon or turgeon, but still someone i'd be on board with

That's what I've read but there are going to be lots of people that are going to look at Oregon and see lots of things that can be used to build the program: new arena, solid core of young players, and a recruiting hotbed up in Portland that has yet to be tapped into.

Interesting. He says we would be "shocked" who they are going after. Could it be someone even bigger than Turgeon or Dixon?
