I wonder how far off we are from teams no longer in any kind of championship hunt (conference or playoffs) to have NIL-minded players start making business decisions to sit out regular season games.
Willie Taggart is a dick.

I was wondering if it could get to the point that between players going to the NFL, transfer portal, and even sitting out for a more promising season next year, there’d be so many players sitting that some teams couldn’t even field a team for a bowl game.pezsez1 wrote:I wonder how far off we are from teams no longer in any kind of championship hunt (conference or playoffs) to have NIL-minded players start making business decisions to sit out regular season games.

I would imagine there is some contractual language in these NIL deals that would prohibit sitting (probably more than one game) unless there is an emergency or injury that occurs.

This is consistent with what I have heard as well from people who have connections at OS. I have heard the divisions in the locker room are deep and while Smith has done his best ( I don't doubt that) it is an issue. Again does it impact Friday, hard to say but the narrative has been pretty consistent from more than one person.spacefrog13x wrote:Grain of salt and all that. But i have a connection in the UO AD. That person has connections with their counterpart throughout the Pac-12. They told me last week that Smith has had to quell unrest in the locker room over fighting between players openly discussing transfer portal/where they will play next year and guys loyal to Smith. How much that actually means when the lights come on and they strap on their helmets, who knows.
The short week might actually be to the benefit of OSU if that is true, since its one less day for the two factions in the locker room to interact with each other.

This is the final weekend of Pac 12 football for everyone but the conference championship teams. Pretty crazy.

Hot damn I feel bad for the Beavers because if their coach is entertaining the idea of a new job, that kind of thing can be distracting

Here's the way I see it. If you're in active negotiations you don't release a public statement, especially a statement giving so much detail. You limit your ability to negotiate by doing so.OregonFan4Life wrote:I’m in the middle, I find nothing about that statement that indicates whether Smith will leave or not. I’m sure they’ve had plenty of discussions, but I do understand they aren’t able to offer the financial incentives to Smith to get even close to comparing to Michigan State and Texas A&M but I don’t feel that statement indicates that.pezsez1 wrote:I don't read that statement the same way. To me, it reads like the AD and Smith are on common ground and are working toward keeping things stable at OSU.
I think Smith's own statement to Canzano should be significantly more worrisome to Oregon State fans, especially when compared with Lanning's blunt smackdown of A&M rumors just days earlier.
I would honestly be surprised if OSU allowed Smith to walk. Like Duck07 said, keeping him should be their absolute #1 priority. He's a great coach and him staying would probably keep a lot of players in Corvallis. If he goes then that entire roster is a flight risk.

Also, anyone else think Jonathan Smith's face could be Real Life Popeye?

But if you're trying to leverage it with your current employer....DuckMastaFunk wrote:Here's the way I see it. Duck07 wrote:Yeah, that reads like OSU is not going to pay Market value for Smith which seems dumb for them as I think if they gave him a 9M/year contract he probably would stay and make that money back every year for the school from the success the team would have by going 10-2 as the floor in a Pac-Mtn the way Chris Peterson did at Boise.
What else do they think they should do with the PAC FB/BB Revenues they're getting to split with WSU, just pay off the stadium debt?
How could they? Cut all non revenue sports? They have no tv deal going forward, and no conference. They can’t survive that way.

The way I see it, the only chance at survival they will have is to make football a priority now that a 12-team playoff exists going forward.buckmarkduck wrote:

They can't solve every problem they face right now, but losing Smith for an extra 2-3M/year seems like the worst way to go about maintaining the football program in the hopes of maintaining relevance for the next realignment that will undoubtedly occur.

I doubt it’s 2-3m. MAU was paying their last coach 9m. You don’t think Smith would want that from them also?

OSU would have the $ to pay that kind of money in the short term but at what cost? The Beavers will have a limited war chest to continue behaving like a Power 4 school for only a few years... puts a lot of pressure on them in terms of matching salaries with an ambitious buyer.I doubt it’s 2-3m. What money? The lawsuit is far from over thanks to OS and WsU greedpezsez1 wrote:OSU would have the $ to pay that kind of money in the short term but at what cost?
