I think one of the reasons Lanning likes it here is that it isn't cutthroat to quite the same degree. We're still a fanbase that is new to consistently being in the top 10 - we don't expect it with the same entitled attitude that some of the traditional blue-chip ̶p̶r̶o̶g̶r̶a̶m̶s̶ progrums do. It's hard to always perform with a gun to your head.

I think the old standard was 4-5 years for a new coach to make major improvements. That time frame allowed for the new coach to recruit to his system.

Now it the era of NIL and transfer portal, it's more like 2-3 years to get the job done.

I know Lanning won’t leave Oregon for LSU but seeing his name still makes me slightly nervous. I should trust him and know he’s leaving but I can’t help it!

I feel really good that Dan isn't going to move his family to Baton Rouge, LA.

I wonder if they might go after Brian Kelly now? Like him or not, the guy has won everywhere he's been. Unfortunately for him, a 34-14 record didn't cut it at LSU, but that doesn't take away the outstanding seasons when he coached at Western Michigan, Cincinnati and Notre Dame.

You never know. I know that there've been current and former players who've come out and said what horrible person he is, and there may be some truth to that. Still, it's hard to imagine him getting away with that at Notre Dame very long.

I'll never understand the allure of Joe Brady. Outside of him being a passing coordinator on an LSU offense with historic talent, he hasn't really done anything notable. He's been a mediocre NFL coordinator, and from what I recall, didn't really have interest in being a college coach long-term. I swear I remember there being talk about him not wanting to stick in college or come back after he had left for the NFL. Maybe I'm wrong, and he'll be a great CEO type, but it's always seemed like college fans pine for him more than any actual ADs or NFL fans (each team he's been a coordinator for have had fans calling for his head, but I have established here that no team's fans are happy with their OC, so I can only take that with a grain of salt.) That said, if that's who PSU gets, I'm all for it.

Regarding Brian Kelly, he is an absolute scumbag, and I don't think there's really any doubt about it. That said, we've seen teams look beyond that many times. Hell, everyone still pines for Urban Meyer, who is just a more successful version of Brian Kelly.

I texted a Penn State buddy earlier about how he would feel if they picked up Brian Kelly from LSU. Response "Terrible."

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised to see Arkansas hire Petrino as HC. They've already allowed him back as an assistant after his previous debacle, and due to the lack of good candidates because of all the HC job openings now, he may be their best option.

In addition, even though his reputation has been tarnished from his past, in this era of NIL, money talks and those things matter less.

Yeah, I could see them go with either Petrino or Malzahn.

I don't know if this has already been discussed, but is it a possibility that Jonathan Smith could return to the Beavers? I wouldn't consider it likely and certainly wouldn't predict it, but I see (1) how poorly MSU seems to be doing under him (losers of six straight and 3-6 this year; 8-13 overall well into his second year) and (2) I guess I'm remembering how hometown boy Mike Riley was welcomed back to OSU in 2003 after leaving the Beavers for the NFL in the late 1990s. If I had to guess, I'm thinking that it's likely that Smith will be given another year to turn things around at MSU, but the Beavers need someone for next season.

I just think it would be pretty intriguing if he ever did return to Corvallis given that he did have real success there (at least by what I think are Beavers' standards).

The OSU administration is desperate to win, so never say never, but Smith really burned bridges on his way out. I could see it down the line but it's been less than two years so it's hard for me to picture. Who knows, though.

From my understanding, Smith with less than pleased with the administration during the realignments, so I'm thinking any hard feelings are probably mutual on his end also.
