New QB?

I think that he'll turn out in one of three ways: he RS and becomes a solid player, RS and becomes a very good player, or never plays valuable minutes for Oregon. Either one is a chance you take on every player. You never know how a player will turn out because there are so many variables that affect a player's career. Looking at Hawkins measurables, he looks to have everything you could want in a WR: good height, good speed, and good weight. The only things we don't know about him is how hard of a worker he is and how much heart he has. The rating systems don't take into account those things. He seems to be the type of player that fell under the radar since Nebraska isn't exactly known for producing top-flight recruits. His rating is also off because he didn't attend any of the big camps that get you noticed. I would suggest that people temper their thoughts on this kid. We should be glad that we have a player that wants to come to Oregon now that he has a chance at the FBS level.

Do people think duckgrad99 is cheering against the Ducks. Many of you make it seem that anything other than total support for each Ducks decision is basically cheering against the Ducks. Be honest, how many of you when you looked at this board for the first time today were stoked we were getting a LOI from a 1* athlete that has only 1 other offer? My reaction was WTF! So why can't someone post that and not be called a negaduck. It's not that I don't want him to succeed because I do more than anything. I hope he's goes down as the best player Oregon's ever had at whatever position he plays.

I was, but I'm a one star recruit with no offers. So I was envious (sp?) and then stoked.

If the coaches are interested in picking up a 2-3* QB or RB then they must know what they are doing. Whether we pick up a QB or RB that is not rated very high in this class or not, the Ducks will still get 1-2 good QB's and RB's each in next years class. For a fan to say we don't need a RB or QB in this class unless they are a 4-5* is crazy, remember 2 years ago, our QB situation? The coaches know what they are doing.

The thing is, I like the pick-up. Not because I am blind, but because of the kid's sucesses in multiple sports and his potential. He thinks he can get faster than 4.47 in the 40 at 6' 4" and has the ability to throw on the run. What is not to like? - oh ya, "Well, he isnt one of the popular kids, so I can't like him". Time to get past high school thinking isnt it? Get an opionion on your own from what has been presented and quit being simply a follower of a popularity contest. Who cares who overlooked him. Tom Brady = 6th round pick. How many Patriot fans rolled their eyes at that one? I am the opposite of Duckgrad in that I love it when coaches go after hidden gems that have tons of potential. Teams like Boise State thrive on of kids like this, why wouldn't we? This kid seems to have limitless potential. Good get.

I LOVE IT. These are the types of kids that have gotten our program to it's current status. NOt picking up 8 5* players like USC, tOSU. Sure I'd love to have some more of those players, but they chose this guy over MR. FLorida and I imagine Frost has seen him play plenty.
If Frost and CK approve= I approve!

Thanks pillpushingduck for the information. I really like this kid. Athletic and very competitive. I'll bet he sees the field, maybe not as quarterback but in some capacity. He's got Duck style!

Wow, just watched his vid. He runs a high school version of our offense. Quick release, fast feet, smart decisions on the option. VERY athletic. I'm very impressed. Was the talent level on D top level, probably not, but this kid clearly was the best athlete on the field.
He may amount to nothing, but I'm okay with this selection.

I like this signing too, but then I have a different approach. To me, it is more enjoyable when you take guys who got passed over by the big schools and do great things with them in the context of a TEAM game. Just imagine if Jordan Kent had played all four years as a football player...that could be what we have here, and that is exciting to me. Also, did I read correctly that his dad is a WR coach? C'mon guys, this is what Oregon football is about. We aren't about getting the big stud recruits like Texas, we are about getting a team that plays well together and then beating up on Texas in the 2000 Holiday Bowl!

I have a good feeling about him. Everything that you guys have posted suggests he's extremely athletic and is a Chris Harper-type player (with some more QB skills) My prediction? This kid's gonna be huge. With CK working with this kid for another 3-4 years, he's going to be a serious contributor to our team. and could we please keep this thread so that when Daryle becomes big, we can all punch duckgrad99 in the face?

im confused as to what it takes to 'earn' 4 or 5 stars. this kid has it all. i mean harper was a 4 star that couldn't pass. this guy is just as fast, taller, and has an arm. he's a 3 sport star, and led a team to a state championship? makes me think the star system is a little too political.

i agree tho, its more fun to have an unheralded player come in and star than to have mr. 5star tear it up for 3 years then go pro. and i've never seen it as a disavantange to recruit players who stay and develope for 5 years instead of three. Think about basketball, how the mid-majors compete, they have 5 year seniors who know the game inside and out, and they go up against ucla's fresmen all-americans. i say advantage mid-major.

I, for one, don't mind this at all. Unfortunately guys like Tajh Boyd and Darron Thomas don't last long in one program together when they are so close in class. There was no chance both would still be here in 4 years and probably unlikely both would have still been here in 2. As we have seen with our injury history, we need depth at the QB position and since we were his only big time offer, he may be more patient waiting for his chance than a 4* or 5* guy.

He only started his senior year which is probably a big reason why he was under the radar. This kid is clearly a great athlete and he'll give us depth and a developmental player at the QB position; and because of that athletic ability he could always move to other positions as a fall back option. His high GPA and ACT seem to indicate that he has a great work ethic, character, and intelligence. Intangibles that are necessary at the QB position.

...and who knows, Masoli didn't have any offers out of HS and I don't think anyone is still down on him.
