Sean Miller and Maryland with mutual interest?

This could shake up the PAC a little...

The Washington Post reported this afternoon that Sean Miller and University of Maryland Athletic Director Kevin Anderson had expressed mutual interest in the head basketball position now open thanks to the retirement of Gary Williams.

Citing unnamed sources, the Post wrote that Anderson was expected to travel following Williams' announcement supposedly to speak with Miller about the opening.

Miller has ties to the Atlantic Coast Conference having been an assistant at North Carolina State under Herb Sendek. However, two years into his stay at Arizona, he has already compiled a 46-23 record, won a Pac-10 championship, made it to the 2011 Elite Eight, and is welcoming in a top ten recruiting class.

To make matters interesting it seems Miller's wife Amy has some allergy issues out here in the desert that could make a move back to the east coast more appealing. On Wednesday May 4th, she tweeted: "An all new low...allergic to everything in the desert! Doc can't believe it. Where can I hide?" She then followed that up with: "Might have to head back east or to the west doesn't matter just away from desert. Shots can't help soon enough."

Would be a huge shock if he left. I could see Arizona going after Memphis' Josh Pastner due to his ties with the school.

I know an Arizona fan on a different site, and he has been legitimately worried about Miller leaving for a couple of days. I don't know if it will happen, but he seems to think that there is a good chance of it happening.

Yeah, this wouldn't be shocking at all.

Even if he leaves, I think they'll get someone who can maintain the level they're at.

Will be bad for both UA and the Pac-12 if he left. Has brought back the program to an elite level
and helped make the Pac-10 more competitive (and we are the worst of the Major Conferences.)

Would be sad to see him go.

Nothing that is bad for Arizona is bad for UO.

Latest rumor is Tubby Smith will be named the head coach next week. I wonder if some Maryland fans will be less than enthused about this choice.

Is Dick Vitale losing it?

"My choice would be Tubby Smith. Instant credibility, he's a winner, he's a guy who's a class guy," Dick Vitale said on a Washington, D.C., radio show Friday. "There's never any problems in terms of the NCAA. I think personally, and he might not say this, but he's available. I think he would leave Minnesota. He has family still living in the Baltimore area, and I think he would leave to come to Maryland."

I think Smith keeps his name in the running long enough for him to get some kind of financial reward or facility upgrade from Minnesota. They've been real stingy with spending on the basketball team.

Macmallard saying he's hearing it's a done deal, Miller is gone. He has great source but we'll see, nothing is done until the paper is signed.

As for them keeping the same level, I don't think they will land a coach as good as Miller. Patchner or however you spell it is more then likely the guy, and he's not in the same class as Miller.

Agree. Miller is one of the best coaches in the country, both in terms of x's and o's and recruiting.

Josh Pastner is an excellent young coach though and is known for being one of the better recruiters in the country. I don't think Arizona will see much of a decline, but their upside as a team isn't as high with Pastner.

Amazing hire by Maryland if it comes to fruition.

How does this effect recruiting for the Cats... There is at least 1 unsigned 2011 PF (Angelo Chol, out of San Diego) on their list of commits, and Grant Jerrett is a currently committed 2012 PF.

I doubt they lose anyone since it's so late in the recruiting cycle, but the players they have committed would draw a lot of attention if they got a release or decommitted.
