Was I hallucinating earlier today or did I read that osu/Riley are going to run some spread option O with Katz this season?!! Anyone else read that in the Oregonian today?

It's not entirely out of the question since the spread is pretty flexible and depending on the elements they incorporate, it could work, but not as well as Oregon's finely tuned version.

Won't they have to turn in their lunch pails for that?

They are if they want to get faster since being big but not fast usually doesn't work in a spread option.

That would be just like the Beavers to run a gimmicky offense.

Funny I wanna see them run just to see them try it. Try it against us at Eugene this year.

Katz was offered by Oregon and recruited by Kelly to run the Oregon spread. I'm not sure why it would be a problem at OSU who also uses zone blocking.

OSU was able to successfully integrate elements of Willamette's flysweep offense in a very short period of time. They already run spread formations so integrating some zone read would be a piece of cake. Heck the Spread with zone/read is one of the most common offenses now at the high school level.

That could be said about running their regular offense too.

Don't be shocked if Terron Ward, TJ Wards little brother wouldn't thrive running in a spread. Terron was the most productive high school RB in Northern California but was downgraded by the recruiting services because of his size. OSU has had a lot of success with guys who were super productive in HS but passed over by the big boys because of one measure-able of another.

That's who I'm also thinking they may be tailoring the offense for but I'm not sure it will completely work with the rest of the players on the roster.

Interesing. Which player do you think it wouldn't work for? Katz can run and throw on the run. Getting him out of the pocket would help him not get so many passes knocked down. James Rodgers is the dream Tazer if he gets healthy. Wheaton is a rocket who unlike many speedsters also knows how to get open and catch the ball. Bishop is a tremendous athlete and Haluni?? their TE does everything we ask for of our TEs. Seriously, there skill position people would be terrific in our system. I actually think they are better suited to run our offense than to run their own pro spread. If their O-Line sucks in the spread it would probably suck in their existing system as well, but having Katz moving might actually mask some of their O-Line deficiencies.

I'm not saying they would run the spread zone/read better than Oregon but it might be better for them than what they are running now.

I think the biggest thing that would hold them back in a spread is their OL since it's designed for a pro-style offense and probably isn't up to par on the zone blocking scheme utilized in most spread option attacks.

Makes sense...

It's a hell of a lot easier to recruit for the spread option over a prostyle system.

Shouldn't they work on running their regular offense first?
