Should Miami get the death penalty?

It would really shake things up if they did…especially with conferences looking to extend invites to schools in the ACC

IF the allegations are factual (and they appear well documented) then I think it needs to be seriously considered. The only way to control this type of alleged actions on the part of boosters is for the fan base to be involved, and the only way to involve them is if they have something at risk. Vacating wins means nothing (we won on the field), a bowl ban means they have just one less game each year, and scholarship reductions probably mean they regress to an average instead of an elite team for a couple years. Do fans at Alabama, for example, really care how many times the NCAA sanctions them as long as they are in a position to contend for a NC in between?

It's really tough to say.

I've already elaborated on my position about this in the other thread. But, no. I don't think they should.

I don't think that other fans could do much about it either.

The one thing I could see working to deter this more effectively would be to ramp up the consequences for players IN THE NFL. Maybe some kind of NCAA/NFL agreement where players can be suspended without pay in the NFL if they are found to have violated NCAA rules in college. Though, I'm not sure if the NFL would ever be willing to give up that kind of power (the players union sure as hell wouldn't.).

The NFLPA would never allow such a punishment to be enacted. As for the death penalty in CFB, I don't think that it should ever really be used but this case could make the NCAA reconsider it.

I don't think any school should ever get the death penalty.....I think 5 years maxed out penalties is the worst possibly penalty....IE 5 year TV ban, bowl ban, 10 scholarships per year etc......5 years of that would be hugely detrimental to any team

I agree that anything over 5 years is just way too harsh and that a 5 year maximum hurts far worse than most people realize.

Yeah, I'm not in favor of giving the death penalty. If the allegations prove to be true, then obviously Miami deserves stiff punishment, but the death penalty proves too much of a point.

Totally agree... the DP is way too harsh especially considering a lot of the violations occurred before the current coaches/players were in Miami...

I know its been mentioned, but the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary Pony Excess on SMU Football (Pony Excess, a play on words of Pony Express as the SMU backfield was known in those days) is a must see for any college football fan...

I mean 5 years without TV or a bowl is in essense a bowl ban.....Not seeing or hearing about the U for 5 years would kill almost all their national cache and they would only be talked about locally. After 5 years they'd become an afterthought essentially. I think a TV ban is worse than a bowl ban personally. That's pretty harsh

Question about TV bans though......would they still get their revenue allotment from the ACC TV deal or no?

It should definitely be on the table!! If it is, what it has been presented to be, then... Players (not involved) can transfer. Coaches involved should get the 'show-cause penalty' (that includes coaches still in the league, but coaching somewhere else, also) and the ones not involved can go somewhere else.

And the tens of thousands of fans, alumni and legal boosters? They can just pretend that they never went to the school, grew up watching the program with family, invested money in the program via legitimate means?
