A few weeks ago I got asked a question on a radio show about which program I thought had the potential to become the next powerhouse. My answer was Oregon. Now I realize the Ducks have won at least 10 games four times since 2000, but to me this would be taking the jump from very good to great. So taking that a step further, this week's top 10 list is the programs with the best chance to reach true powerhouse status and win a national title within the next five years. (The one caveat is I'm looking at schools that have NOT won the title in the past decade.)

3. Oregon: I see the Ducks as an emerging force in the West. New head coach Chip Kelly has an exciting, wide-open system that is attractive to players. The program has some cachet and the Nike connection sure isn't hurting. USC is still the elite program on the West Coast but if Oregon can land a few more quality defensive players, the Ducks have a chance to make things very interesting. Who knows, if some of Oregon's JC transfers can come through on defense, the Ducks could end USC's run of Pac-10 dominance this fall.

Powerhouse?

Close, but not yet.. CK has yet to be a head coach under any school, so I think it's a little premature to be saying anything since we've never seen what he could do as a head coach. CK is magician and I think he'll do fine, but I have to admit I'm a little surprised to see us that high.
But I do think we are on the verge.

2 teams that I think will see big time improvements over the next few years: UNC and Stanford, watch out.

I think that for Oregon to ever be considered a "powerhouse", their defense has to significantly improve.

He didn't say we were a powerhouse. It was a list of schools who he thought could become one in the next few years. It helps to click the link & read the whole article guys

It's possible.

Decent list except for putting UCLA on it. They had one bad season so far, I guess good recruiting, but a chance at a National Championship in five years? You must be joking.

I'm honestly a little surprised to see that stanford isn't on there
It will be longer than 5 years for them to be a "Powerhouse" but they're definitely going to be competing for a top spot in the Pac in a few years

UCLA has an excellent coaching staff and if they continue to recruit solid classes, they could very well be a powerhouse in 5 years. Add to that the fact that Slick Rick will bend or break a few rules to have some success and the sky is the limit in the short term. Odds are that they will also be in shambles in the 6-10 year window though, after Rick is shown the door.
