Tosh the traitor

Possibly this has already been linked but a rather bitter opinion piece by a Cal blogger. His version of what initially happened...

Tosh was offered a job at Wash and he came to JT with the "my heart is here speech". JT went and fought for Tosh to get the offer matched. JT and Tosh have a meeting where JT tells Tosh how much he wants to keep him, how he is an integral part of what they are doing, etc. He says that he went and got the offer matched and that he wanted him to stay, but that he won't/can't get into a bidding war for Tosh and that he (JT) needs his (Tosh's) word that this is done and that he (Tosh) isn't going anywhere. Tosh assures JT this is over. Tosh breaks his word, continues talking to UW and gets another offer which he doesn't present to JT, as he has already been told and committed to no bidding war.

JT didn't find out Tosh was gone (by voicemail) until he got off the plane for a recruiting trip Tosh was supposed to meet JT on. They were supposed to meet yesterday to recruit and Tosh didn't show.

Lots of implications regarding the ethics of Sarkesian and, depending how the UW staff is organized, possibly Josh Wilcox.

Crappy but its a job and poeple quit all the time and we don't know the back story...CAL should be bitter, dude was/is a BEAST at recruiting! It sucks for them but they need to move on, if Tosh wanted to be with CAL he would still be there.

I think it's an unwritten rule that you don't actively recruit kids from your previous school unless they contact you first. Sounds like Tosh and the gang has been working over and visiting all the talent he left behind at Cal.

I know a lot of guys rip on Tedford for his tenure at Cal, but I really believe so many of his problems have stemmed from the AD and its unwillingness to back its rhetoric about being competitive in football but not providing the resources to do so. I don't doubt that Tosh wanted to stay at Cal, but Tosh also knew about the Cal AD and its problems so in the end the guy made a business decision to probably make twice the salary while living in a more tax-friendly state in WA than CA.

In CFB you either pay to keep the coaches or you lose them. Cal didn't want to pay market value for Tosh so they lost him, that's their fault, not his.

Tosh could have been honest with Tedford and still left for UW. When Tedford made him promise not to get into a bidding war, he didn't have to pretend to go along with it... he could have said something along the lines of, "I'm sorry, but I've got to see what Washington is willing to pay me. This may be a once-in-a-lifetime chance I have to take care of myself and my family like never before." Or something to that effect.

What Tosh allegedly did is NOT the kind of business that people want to get engaged in.

Tosh could have been honest with Tedford and still left for UW. When Tedford made him promise not to get into a bidding war, he didn't have to pretend to go along with it... he could have said something along the lines of, "I'm sorry, but I've got to see what Washington is willing to pay me. This may be a once-in-a-lifetime chance I have to take care of myself and my family like never before." Or something to that effect.

What Tosh allegedly did is NOT the kind of business that people want to get engaged in.

From what I read, Tosh didn't promise not to go back to Washington. Just that Tedford told him that they wouldn't go into a bidding war over him. He had to know that Tosh would at the very least talk to his Washington contact again to finalize his decision, either way.

If it went down like that, Tedford isn't in a position to be surprised. It's like saying, "you're not worth competing over." It would also explain why Tosh didn't give Cal a chance to counter offer. Tedford told him up front they wouldn't give a counter-offer.

If Tedford honestly thought he could negotiate that way..... then he's the D-bag not Tosh.
