About 12 hours after running back Isaiah Crowell was arrested on three weapons charges, coach Mark Richt announced the former No. 1 recruit in the country had been dismissed from the team.

"We have a dedicated and committed group of men who are working hard to prepare for the coming season," said Richt in a statement. "Our total focus will be directed toward the team and this effort."

Although the statement was brief, it didn't seem to leave room for Crowell to return.

According to the (Athens Clarke County police) spokesman, Crowell's car was stopped at 2:20 when an officer reported smelling the odor of marijuana. Crowell's car was searched, no marijuana was found but police did locate a 9-mm Luger handgun with the altered serial number. The gun was found under the driver's seat.

Two of the charges were felonies and the other was a misdemeanor and Crowell was originally booked on a $7,500 bond, which was raised to $9,500.

"Crowell facing 2-5 yrs on gun in school zone charge & 1-5 yrs on altered serial numbers, according to Georgia sentencing guidelines"

Because of potential jail time, it's hard to speculate where Crowell might try to restart his career. He rushed for 850 yards and five touchdowns in an injury-riddled first season with the Bulldogs.

Send him to CornValley... I hear they handle this stuff "the right way"...

I've always really respected Richt. Crowell is an idiot.

As a college kid, there's really no need for him to driving around with a gun, unless he's looking for trouble or involved with people that could get him into it.

Come on, given what we went through a few years ago, we should be the last to say a program is out of control. How quickly people forget, I guess?

Reviewing AJC archives over the past four years, these latest suspensions would bring to 28 the number of players who will not be playing for the Bulldogs at the beginning of the 2012 season who otherwise would be eligible.

Since January, the Bulldogs have lost 13 players to transfer, disciplinary punishment or inability to achieve academic eligibility. That number balloons to 19 including losses off of last year’s roster.

I knew a Duck athlete that carried because he had received threats to his person and was stalked at times. That said, he also had a concealed carry license and followed proper protocols like the overwhelming majority of gun owners.

Crowell is an idiot and frankly I'm a little shocked some of the SEC schools (I'm excluding Vandy ) don't have a mandatory class where they remind each athlete of all the morons over the last decades and how they put themselves into bad positions.

I'm sure Alabama St is stoked though!

Sounds like a class that may be offered at UNC Chapel Hill with all of the academic integrity issues they're having.

In the case of that athlete, I'm fine with since he went through the proper steps in carrying a concealed firearm.

So, doesn't mean he isn't a good coach and a good guy? Same things could be said about Kelly.

Any big program is going to have some bad apples, how they handle the situations really gauges my respect for coaches.

I think that's part of the problem. Every time (at least three times now) I hear him asked about the issue he gets very defensive and basically says that nothing is wrong and that boys will be boys. I personally want to hear that the coach understands there is an issue and has a plan moving forward. I haven't heard this from Richt. There is just something that rubs me the wrong way about him that I feel every time I hear an interview, I'm not sure what it is.
