Take notes sportingnews. The top 5 really do separate themselves from the rest of the pack. If Oregon wins out, they are in the natty. Although it is possible Oklahoma and one of LSU/Bama win out. I still think we'd get the nod though.
So exciting, unlike most people, I love preseason rankings. Putting numbers on teams is college football. And eventually overrated teams will drop, and those overlooked will rise.

I think Oregon deserves to be in the 4 spot but I may be a bit bias!

I see Notre Dame crept in to the rankings towards the end, some things never change (though they may actually be a 20-25 level team this year).
I like the potential for this matchup against USC being a top 2-3 matchup. Game of the year perhaps?

It's too bad that it's the same week as bama vs LSU. Those are likely the best 2 games and could very well be at the exact same time

Just my quick opinions:
Georgia and WVU are vastly overrated. WVU had an amazing bowl game but also won the Big East via a 3-way tie and I believe got absolutely HOUSED by Syracuse. SYRACUSE!!!! They also won their last 3 regular season games by a combined 7 points against powerhouse opponents Cinci, Pitt, and USF. Granted this is a new year, but they aren't playing Pitt, Cinci and USF anymore. Now they have to play Oklahoma, Kansas State, Texas, OK State etc.
As for Georgia, I just don't buy it. Aaron Murray looks good but they lost their top RB and they were a terrible rushing offense last year. They won the SEC East in what was a down year for Florida and Tennessee was deplorable. They benefited from the fact that the 3 best SEC teams were in the SEC West
I think Va Tech should be higher though. I'm a big fan of the QB Logan Thomas and their WR's. Sucks that they lost RB David Wilson to the NFL but I think they are a Top 12-15 team.
Just my 2 cents.

USC Oregon is already slated for the 5pm kick, right? Bama LSU is gonna be the CBS game and they'll want it in primetime also and it's at LSU who always wants the night game

I don't think they have set the time for the USC Oregon game yet, 5 seems about right to me (probably 4 behind LSU, Bama and USC) would be how I would have it.

So do I. I have several cousins that are die hard Oklahoma fans who think they may lose 3-4 games this year.
They just lost their all Big-12 starting center, who decided to give up football after neck and back injury.
They also just lost a highly rated JC transfer who didn't qualify academically.
They just reinstated three receivers to practice status only, but, like us, are very inexperienced at the wide receiver position.
Finally, we saw how bad Landry Jones looked after they lost Ryan Broyles for the season last year. I think he's WAY overrated!
That being said, Oklahoma is Oklahoma. They'll be loaded with talent, but not like some of their teams from the past. They haven't had super recruiting classes the past 3-4 years like they used to have.
I could see potential upsets against both TCU AND West Virginia, maybe more. I could be wrong, but I don't see them as being a Top-5 team. Top-10/15 probably, but not Top-5.
I'd call Alabama and LSU a tossup right now and USC and Oregon #3 and #4. Georgia will be good, but #6 seems a bit high. Florida State will be loaded with talent, but they never seem to pan out.
Anyway, I can't wait for the season to start so we can find out.

I am going to be a bit middle of the road between the coaches poll and the sporting news poll. Please try to bear with me as I have had a long day today but will do my best to make sense. I think to start out the season the coaches poll has us just about where we should be. I do also think that we still as much as I hate to say it that we lose to USC twice unless the injury bug bites them. I still hope I am wrong because hate USC. It not unrealistic to think we can beat them. If though I am correct and we do lose twice I would say we end up around 11th by seasons end with the 2 losses before the bowl game.

We are getting a 7:00 start time for Bama, that is already inked in and a locked since last year. According to ESPN the USC vs Ducks game start time is TBA. I'm betting it will be played during the day.

I think Oregon and USC could be overrated this year. SC has serious depth issues and could easily have a bust season if things do not go right. We've seen that core group of guys quit on a season in the recent past. Oregon is in the same boat, major depth issues at RB, and huge inexperience at the most important position (QB). From an experience standpoint, the team has like what, 10 seniors and 65 freshmen + sophomores... That being said, the future is very, very bright for Oregon, but I think if we're going to have a down year in CK's era, it'll be in 2012. I'm calling Natty in 2013, when Mariota and/or Bennett have a full season under their belt, Dat will be a Jr., the O and D lines will be hitting their prime, the DB's will be Jr's, the WR's will have a season to shake out who the playmakers are, the home schedule will be friendlier, not playing 3 out of 4 games on the road in November against the best teams in the Pac-12 (@ SC, @ Cal (MAJOR TRAP GAME), STAN, @OSU), and some big time recruits coming in at RB (Thomas Tyner (5-Star), Dontre Wilson (LMJ v.2)), and the very last year before the playoff system implements (which only plays against Oregon because of the depth issues presented in a longer season)...
*BIG BREATH* That being said, I obviously would love to see nothing else more than to see Oregon 4Peat and win the Natty or BCS Game in 2012. That's obviously the best case scenario. Realistically though, if Barner or DaT or both miss some games from toting the rock, and Mariota or Bennett falter on the road in the Big Games (@USC, @Cal, @Pac-12 Championship), Oregon could be 10-3 and headed to the Holiday Bowl...

Using this same logic, shouldn't teams like Arky, Georgia, So Carolina, etc also have at least 2 losses - against teams not ranked as high as USC? My read is that this is a pre-season poll, not an expected end of season poll, which is in essence pretty worthless but that's another topic. I would agree with you in having unknown expectations of how we will fare against SC but it is hard to win twice against a good team you match up with in the same season, let alone in the same month. (ask LSU how that worked out against Bama)(Sorry Bud).
