The Panthers have options with using multiple back sets and also putting Barner out wide, which he also did while playing at Oregon. With Barner the Panthers have one of the fastest players in the NFL and Newton has shown that he has explosive speed too and if the running game is going well, that should open things up for Newton on all sides of the field. The team has looked good so far in camp and Barner has shown the same speed he had in college and if he continues playing well the Panthers will have no choice but to get him on the field. The team likes Newton running, but they want the running backs to be the leaders in the running game this year.
Barner might get some more looks and reps as the summer goes on, as Jonathan Stewart may not be ready for the start of training camp in July.
Nice to see him getting praise from his teammates and hopefully he gets playing time all over the field during the season.

Great news to hear on KB. I been looking for some info on how he is doing with the Panthers.

There are 49 players faster than him
from this years combine alone.

I will just say this...did you ever see Kenjon get caught from behind when he broke into the open? The 40 time doesn't necessarily translate to "football" speed which is why I've never understood the fascination with the 40. Great, in perfect conditions and after training specifically for the drill a guy can run a 4.30. Strap a helmet and pads on, run a stretch play and let's see his speed off of a cut with defenders at his legs. The gap between that dainty speedster running a 4.30 and a bigger back with "football" speed who runs a 4.5 disappears pretty quickly.

I've never understood why they don't run them in full pads.

Even if they ran it in full pads, it still doesn't simulate an actual football play. If I had to pick 3 combine tests as the only tests I can use as the world's most amazing fictional NFL GM, I'd probably go with the Vertical Jump, the 3 cone short shuttle and the Broad Jump. With the Broad and Vert, you can get an idea of a players explosive power.

I'm researching your ideas here to see if they can correlate into some Fantasy Football rookie projection success for my teams this year. Under your criteria for evaluating the 'best' rb's the following 2013 running backs from the NFL combine would be the top players...
Vert Jump:
Christine Michael 43" (Tex A&M)
Rex Burkhead 39" (Neb)
Michael Ford 38.5" (LSU)
NOTE: Barner Vert Jump was 35.5"
Broad Jump:
Michael Ford 10'10"
Rex Burkhead 10'5"
Christine Michael 10'5"
Note: Barner Broad Jump was 10'2"
3 Cone:
Christine Michael 6.69
Zac Stacy 6.7
Le'Veon Bell 6.75
Rex Burkhead 6.85
Kenjon Barner 6.87
Michael Ford 6.87
20-Yard Shuttle:
Christine Michael 4.02
Rex Burkhead 4.09
Kenjon Barner 4.20
Michael Ford 4.25
Physical Attributes:
Christine Michael 5'10", 220lbs. (40 Time 4.55)
Rex Burkhead 5'10", 214lbs. (40 Time 4.73)
Michael Ford 5'9", 210lbs. (40 Time 4.50)
Kenjon Barner 5'9", 196lbs. (40 Time 4.52)
Given all of those results and physical stats (not counting the 40 time), how does any team not draft RB's in this order:
1. Christine Michael
2. Rex Burkhead
3. Michael Ford
And counting the 40 time:
1. Christine Michael
2. Michael Ford
3. Rex Burkhead
Actual Draft Order of Running Backs:
1. Giovanni Bernard
2. Eddie Lacy
3. Joseph Randle
4. Andre Ellington
5. Monte Ball
6. Marcus Lattimore
7. Stefan Taylor
8. Jonathan Franklin
9.
Christine Michael
10. Le'Veon Bell
Kenjon later gets drafted, followed by Burkhead, but Michael Ford doesn't even get drafted! What are the NFL scouts looking for that this criteria doesn't seem to match?
Much Fun!

...and good people...good teammates...good leaders...etc.
The combine can help or hurt you, but it typically doesn't "make" you.
