California does a pretty good job of taxing things too, as you may have heard!

These things, as an admitted History nerd, intrigue the heck out of me. The youngest of the coins discovered were minted in 1897....so a little too young for Black Bart. Still, these were obviously intentionally hidden and w/ a face value of $27,000...that would have been a lot of money around the turn of the century.

My great grandfather the moonshiner was able to dowse and went searching for the rumored pirate treasure near Cascade Head in Lincoln City and was positive he had found where it was buried. I suppose I should probably contact the property owners for a deal, lol.

Its the "why" someone would of buried them there that intrigues me. Government didn't call for the gold coins until the 1930's so I don't see that being the reason.

There were numerous stories of unfound loot from the late days of the old west, but it could have easily been fom as late as the Prohibition era.

Who knows what stories a stash like that could tell?

Speaking of bootleggers and a different kind of prohibition era "stash", we have a good friend whose family purchased an old vineyard and "winery" up in the hills of west Sonoma County some time ago. When they went in to renovate the building the "winery" (really a glorified barn) was kept in, they discovered several cases of some very old whiskey bottles in the cellar. Turns out when they'd smuggle Canadian whiskey coming into Tomales Bay they could smuggle it up to the winery through the old ranch roads and store it there as a way point or hold over before it went out to San Francisco or wherever. Neither here nor there really, but an interesting little piece of history.

Sounds as if it should be nicely aged, by now..

I'm on big on history too and these types of stories are fantastic, it would be great if some history detectives looked into it.

I'm sure that was a joke...but....a little known fact is that whiskey and wine does not actually age in glass and given the rot that they passed off as booze back then it would probably make you go blind.

So would the stuff that came out of the still we found on the hill behind the Oakridge Airport, when we were kids... Complete with a lead radiator used as a condenser.

It's all about heat regulation and the quality of your wash. Rum takes quite a bit of sugar to make a bottle (potato vodka is 8-15lbs of spuds/bottle depending on quality of your wash/still/plates etc) and somewhere I've got a file that lists the different %'s you can expect out of molasses, beets, sugar cane etc. The ADI (distilling.com) has really grown in the last couple of years and the forum has lots of good information if you're looking to do it. Things like where to get hydrometers, coils etc.
