Oregon legalizes marijuana

Seemed politically impossible just a decade ago, but here we are. Thoughts?

Florida couldn't pass it for medical use. The amendment needed a %60 yes vote and only got %58 - 59 depending upon the source.

Yeah I saw that, and I saw that Sheldon Addelson poured in like $4 million... Like, why? Why does a casino mogul care if sick people in Florida are allowed to smoke pot?

Not too happy with these election results although I don't really care if this measure passed or not.

Which parts were you not happy with? Your down in Cali right? Or was that just over the summer?

I understand it from a purely $$ reason but I've seen too many people waste away by making weed their #1 priority that I'm not a fan of this.

I supported the measure, but I can see that side of it. I've seen people not live up to their potential, and drug use is often part of why. I personally do smoke sometimes, but I think I enjoy it in a pretty healthy way. I mean, drugs are never a good thing for you, but I think it's like drinking. In moderation, it's okay. And I'm glad we now have the right to do that.

This law was basically introduced to have Oregon be another place for growing the marijuana industry. Just looking at all the money that was in support of the law and it was clear that out-of-state sources that are already major players in the marijuana industry were pushing hard here for the win. I think the everyday person in Oregon is going to see only minimal benefits while those in the industry reap the rewards of people legally being able to hand their money over to them. They also tried to make it seem like marijuana violations were a major cause of people being arrested and tying up courts, when marijuana arrests and prosecutions are low priorities for them. Most just get ticketed and fined with no real harm to their records. These were the main reasons I voted no on the measure. Although the measure passed, I'm not even all that upset with it since I don't use marijuana in the first place so not really facing the chance of being arrested for it.

Yeah, I never fully understood why someone from another state is allowed to pump in so much money . I'm not a smoker so I didn't really care if it passed .

Frankly, there are no valid federal laws outlawing any drugs. Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution outlines the powers of Congress and there is no standing for Congress to rule on substances save for a Constitutional Amendment. Congress knew this back when there was a movement in this country to ban alcohol, which is why the 18th Amendment preceded the Volstead Act because without the Amendment, there would be no foundation for Congress to make the new law and enforce it. Had they just created the Volstead Act, it would have never been enforceable.

So, what standing does Congress use to enforce the Controlled Substances Act? They don't. You can make an argument that at the state level that drug laws are legal, but not at the federal level.

Couldn't the exact same argument be made about alcohol or legal prescription drugs? I've smoked pot like twice in my life so am by no means one of those "legalize it bro!" bros but see hypocrisy with the arguments against it.

^ You could absolutely make that argument with alcohol and data would back that up as well. Obviously we have been there done that with prohibition, and it would be the biggest logistical nightmare to try and ban alcohol again.

In the end, people will always find a crutch or something to help them escape reality, whether it is legal or not.

Nobody wastes their lives from pot, okay. People whose lives are wasted from pot had much bigger issues than some wacky weed to begin with. The heroin junkies are the ones wasting their lives, the lazy pot-smokers typically just need to get a life.

^ My sister who has been living off government assistance for nearly two decades because she keeps failing drug tests and losing jobs

My brother in law who cared more about getting high with his friends than seeing his dying mother on her death bed

My other brother in law who also can't keep a job because he always fails drug tests

My friend who had a full ride to UO golf team but got kicked off/quit because he just wanted to smoke

My friend who had a full ride cross country scholarship but smoked his way out of shape and out of a scholarship

Kid in my youth group who stopped going to school because he just wanted to go get high with his friends

Those are just off the top of my head in about a minute.
