One of my good friends from College grew up in South Carolina and she always commented on how much she missed her moms sweet tea... I wonder why there is such a strong liking of the stuff.. Am I missing out?

The serve it everywhere down here and is a major part of the culture. It's like trying to find a good maple bar doughnut on the east coast.

The quotes and question mark made me wonder what type of tea you were really referring to.

No alcohol, W4P...
This stuff is like 16 oz of sugar with a drizzle of tea, over 2-3 ice cubes... If it doesn't cure a sweet tooth, nothing will.
Maybe a modified version of that concoction won over Bryce Brown for Tennessee... ?
Naah!

I escorted a team of 7 middle school kids back to an international competition on the U-T campus in the early 90's...
That was our first exposure to Sweet Tea. Those kids were wired to the gills on the stuff!

I've never had sweet tea before, but just reading how much sugar is in that tea makes my teeth hurt. It's no wonder why so many people down south have dental problems.alabamaduck wrote:I work in foodservice and make a ton of sweet tea...2 1/2 cups of sugar for 3 gallons of tea...no joke!

I've had southern sweet tea. I prefer Kool-Aid.
BUT, I'm down for collard greens or grits any time!

You had a Grandma, didn'tcha?
Mine was from Wisconsin, and she still served up that stuff, plus fatback, and a host of German foods, I can't pronounce the name of (And most of my friends can't stand the smell of...)!

My maternal Grandma was a German immigrant and I can relate to the interesting aromas that came from the old homestead kitchen she had (cast iron stove and oven). Sadly she passed away when I was young, so I never had much opportunity to experience the traditional crusine she brought with her. I do do remember the smells.woundedknees wrote:You had a Grandma, didn'tcha?

Besides the dental work...wonder if this sweet tea is one of the reasons of the obesity problem that persists in much of the south. Kinda goes in hand with a number of the "energy drinks" that are marketed, the calorie level on some of those is ridiculous.
