Recruiting for dummies

Ask questions about recruiting here. Anything from "What's the difference between a dead period and a quiet period?" to "can a player play for the football team and be on a baseball scholly?"
I have read a lot about some of this stuff and I'm sure between myself and all the very knowledgeable mods on here somebody will know the answer.
And don't think any question is a stupid question. I love talking about recruiting and will take any excuse to talk about it.
Feel free to sticky mods.
PS. The dead period ended today so kids can now get out here on un-official visits, to meet Chip's "visit before commit" rule, and commit so hopefully things will be picking up!

Actually, recruiting for dummies would be a good book to go along with the rest of the dummies books. Not sure there would be enough info to make a whole book though. Maybe Mops, Jhop, TK, etc can write one up!!!!

A.) When a recruit takes an official visit to a school - the athletic department buys the plane ticket, etc., correct? B.) Does the athletic department also pay for a second plane ticket if mom/dad wants to come along? C.) Is there a limit to the number of official visits a school can allow (size of their bank account?)

Schools are limited in the number of official visits (mid 50's, IIRC). Parents also get their expenses paid on an official visit.
"A recruit can visit a college campus, either officially or unofficially, during the recruiting process. An official visit is paid for by the interested school and consists of transportation to and from the college, room and meals during the visit, and reasonable entertainment expenses such as a home athletics contest for the recruit and his or her parents. Before an official visit can take place, the recruit must provide a copy of their high school transcripts and ACT or SAT scores. The recruit is limited to five official visits, which can take place during the contact, evaluation, or quiet periods. An unofficial visit is paid for by the recruit and their family, except for complimentary admissions to a home athletics contest the school may provide. The recruit can talk to the coaches on any unofficial visit except during the dead period. A recruit can take as many unofficial visits as desired."

No, schools can not pay the airfare for relatives/friends of the recruit. It would be nice if they changed this rule and allowed schools to pay the airfare for at least one parent since this puts the Ducks at a competitive disadvantage compared to many schools. It is unlikely this change would happen any time soon since schools are looking to cut costs in this economy, rather than add new ones.
Here is the bylaw covering this issue:
13.5.2.6 Transportation of Prospective Student-Athlete’s Relatives, Friends or Legal Guardians.
An institution shall not permit its athletics department staff members or representatives of its athletics interests
to pay, provide or arrange for the payment of transportation costs incurred by relatives, friends or legal guardians
of a prospective student-athlete to visit the campus or elsewhere; however, an institution may:
(a) Provide automobile-mileage reimbursement to a prospective student-athlete on an official visit, even if
relatives or friends accompany the prospective student-athlete; (Revised: 1/11/94, 5/12/05)
(b) Permit the parents or legal guardians of a prospective student-athlete to ride in an automobile driven by
a coaching staff member for the purpose of providing ground transportation to a prospective student-athlete
as part of an official visit; and (Adopted: 1/14/08 effective 8/1/08)
(c) Provide transportation between its campus and any bus or train station or airport for the parents, relatives
or legal guardians of a prospective student-athlete making an official visit. (Revised: 7/27/07)

Yeah, the limit is 56 for football, 12 for basketball and 25 for baseball.

What's the purpose of having "minor violations" when certain schools can rack them up but absolutely nothing happens? Are they wink wink nudge nudge, or does the NCAA take them seriously? Have they ever taken them seriously?

I have no idea what the point is. From everything I've read they are essentially meaningless. Maybe if a school gets a major violation they would get in more trouble if they have had a bunch of minor violations too but less trouble if the major was their only recent violation??
The NCAA is becoming a joke and it sucks for schools like Oregon who do it right while others are able to cheat and gain an advantage.

Agreed. This is like the NCAA saying, "I swear, if you guys make fun of me 13 or 14 more times...I'm outta here!"

I'm not much of a guru when it comes to the recruiting rules and regulations. I'll leave that one to mops haha.

Greyshirting means enrolling late, correct? So it doesn't count against eligiblity? I guess my question is can Blake Cantu still redshirt?

Greyshirt is like they're not even there so yes, doesn't count against eligibility and yes, you can still redshirt after your greyshirt. Carson York should be a true Junior this year but is a redshirt freshman because he grey and red-shirted.

Who can contact a recruit during the "open" period (or whatever its called)? Former players? Alum? AD's (Bellotti)?
Thanks...
