Is Helfrich watching this staff?

If he is he has to be re-thinking his own recruiting philosophy. The level of effort, energy and enthusiasm this staff is displaying is pretty damn impressive. I just didn't see anything close to this with previous staff and that's on the man at the top of the organization. If he ever wants to be HC at another big time program I hope he's taking notes.

Surely he has to be sulking a bit when he looks. I mean, it's pretty shameful the things that have come out and the level of apathy his staff and team had.

He's had his moments. When he came in initially, he rallied the troops and did some full-staff visits and led to picking up Devon Allen and Cameron Hunt, and holding onto Darren Carrington and the Robinson twins, none of which were gimmes.
But after that, it's been very few and far between where the effort was something you'd applaud.

Yep, he did have a nice early burst and brought in some talent. Add Freeman to your list. Just seems like for whatever reason the energy kind of died.

He didn't have his own recruiting philosophy, he had an outdated Chip Kelly recruiting system. Even with that hurdle and the hurdle of limited visits he still put together top 30 classes every year. Was his staff as good at recruiting as this staff? No. Were they bad at recruiting? No.

They recruited talent into Oregon its what happened after they got here.
They were all so extremly selective to a fault. Some of the recruits this staff
has contacted and getting visits from, the previous staff would not have gotten to even visit.

Sorry but Top 30 doesn't get it done

Like I just said this was a direct result of an outdated Chip Kelly recruiting system they were using. 100%

With the limit on official visits that was in place, a conservative approach with offers and pre-screening was really the only course that was open to them for the last few years. Whether they would have broken that mold is hard to say.
Even with the visit restriction gone, we are going to be running right up against the normal cap this year.

The average Helf class ranked 21.25 and that's with having to deal with NCAA sanctions. The average Chip Kelly class ranked 17 with no sanctions. In that time we went to 2 national championships. I'm all for the "this staff is better at recruiting" statement because it's completely true but let's not be ignorant enough to say the previous staff wasn't good at recruiting and blame Helfrich.

Yep I think you nailed it when you said he didn't have a philosophy. It was just the status quo. Chip had his offense and a huge personality or swagger or whatever you want to call it. Helfrich just seemed very complacent in how he went about it. It seemed he lacked the energy or aggressiveness necessary to compete.

In the thread discussing Greif's article about what went wrong last season, z99clark11 had this to say about the difference between Chip and Helf.
Now back to recruiting. I got to watch Chip recruit my little brother (he ended up at ok state) and then I got to work for Helf. Chip hated recruiting but he did it. He let the brand recruit for him too. He threw out offers and had the balls to say "here is the offer, take it or leave it". With Helf it was like we didn't believe in the power of the brand. We wanted Mike Clay at every position. Mike Clay is an Oregon great, but that doesn't work on the d line. Or at corner. You have to have some creatures. Bama doesn't have 4.0 brainiacs on their d line or at corner, they have 2.5 students who can move. I don't know how many guys we passed up in recruiting because they had one bad post on twitter
Quick story before bed. This kid wanted to walk on for us. Solid athlete. Could have been a special teams guy in the future. Good grades. Good character report from his counselor. Good social media. Except for one post. Their was a picture of him taking a shot with his mom and Dad after graduating high school. We red flagged him for that. Never got a look. That's how rigid the system was.

Helfrich is a middle manager. Puddles could have brought in top 30 classes to Oregon.
He wears v neck sweaters.

Allen was a complete gimmie. He would have committed at anytime if Kelly would have just offered.

I think the 21.25 average is not a true measurement of what helf would actually have done had he not been living off what chip built. But that's a hard hypothetical to simulate.
