Oregon offers UCLA OL commit Jaxson Kirkland

Seems that Oregon is moving to backup options (seems Kanan Ray isn't going to flip) at OL by offering UCLA commit Jaxson Kirkland. Not sure he's the greatest fit at Oregon but it sounds like they're just trying to get some bodies late in the recruiting cycle.

I don't know about you guys, but I am not really excited about this offer. It's all good and all that he an in-state prospect, but his film does not impress me and he doesn't look like he will make an impact at a D-1 Level. I honestly hope this was a back up offer.

Many over on DT are saying he's not impressive either. One poster said he's friends with coaches at West Linn and they designed blitzes to be run at him because he's not all that athletic and he's not all that aggressive for his size.

seems so. Someone has to block. Give this staff a full year to recruit and things will be different. Esp if Ducks do weel this yer on the field.

that said, if they can just reel-in Carr, that makes this class.

I don't know much about him but I will say that I was more impressed with his film than I thought he would be. He's big and aggressive. Looks like a guard.

He's a project player! Period!

They likely made it contingent upon a visit, etc. and is likely a backup in case we fail to land the JUCO tackle this weekend, etc.

In fairness, his Dad was a beast in his day and they see genetics likely see a late developer. He made significant strides between JR. & SR years and still not fully coordinated or reached physical maturation so if we do land him his size and development could turn into something but quite frankly, there's a ton of "IF's" there. The one thing you can't teach is SIZE but man this kid is 3 years from being serviceable.

My hope is part of the offer is to put pressure on other OL we want to quack. If a fall back, I might rather save the schollie until next year or use at DL depth where we're weaker.

Does anyone know if he's better than Cody Shear of Eugene Sheldon High School?

He is not. Kirkland is bigger, but Shear is way more athletic and a more complete lineman at this stage. Kirkland doesn't have good technique and relies way too much on the fact that he's bigger than everyone else. Put him against D-linemen in college and he'd get smoked. Hell, put him against anyone who can rush the passer effectively and he'll probably get smoked.

yep. save the schollie for next year. this kid is marginal Div 1 prospect. Gotta question Taggart on this move.

Ditto DuckedOut. If one of Shear or Kirkland can be viewed as a "Project" (someone who isn't scratching the surface of their abilities), it's Shear because even though he's only about 280 he's much, much more athletic.

Who do you trust? Taggart, MC and the rest of the staff. Or internet recruiting experts. I know where I stand with that question.

I have to agree with this statement, you gotta believe this team of coaches are better evaluators of talent then the so called recruiting pay site "professionals" and us on these boards. Besides that, the kid is a UCLA commit, not exactly a slouch of a football program.
